Some people navigating disability have internalized many of these feelings because of society’s perception of disability, and the genuine struggles of navigating an often inaccessible world. Therapy is a great space to unlearn these harmful ideas, and to rewrite our stories to include disability in a more balanced, honest light.

We always hear “mental health matters” but sometimes it can feel like that only applies if you fit a certain image.

The truth? There is no “perfect” image of what mental health looks like. Healing isn’t a one size fits all, and it’s not supposed to be.

Sometimes this is what therapy feels like…messy, uncomfortable, dreadful, like you’re muddling through. Sometimes it feels like nothing is happening at all. And then suddenly, you’re thinking differently. You’re pausing before you react. You’re setting appropriate boundaries. You’re showing more self-compassion, and grace. You’re letting go. You’re letting people in. You’re not perfect but you’re progressing, and you can see it. You can feel it. The growing happens in the process. It doesn’t happen all at once. It happens in the messy middle, in the in-between.

So appreciative of the support from OVER A CUP and everyone who has poured into me in any way on this journey. Championing mental health is so important to me. Championing disability is so important to me. Recognizing and honoring the intersection of disability and mental health is essential.
