Be Socially Active For Longer Life

Chronological age is your age in years. Your biological age is based on the amount of damage in your cells, tissues and organs over time. New research suggests that people 60 and older who stay socially active have a lower median biological age, healthier habits and a lower risk of dying. Researchers tracked 2,300 seniors who answered questions in regard to lifestyle and psychological health and also provided samples of their blood. After 4 years, researchers found those who were the most socially engaged had a lower "biological" age, less depression and healthier behaviors. Frequent social engagement was also linked to 42% lower risk of dying.

Greens, Fish & AMD

A recent study followed about 1,700 adults with early or intermediate age-related macular degeneration (AMD). After 5 years, participants who ate at least 2.7 servings of green leafy vegetables a week had reduced their risk of developing a more severe level of AMD by 25%, when compared to those who didn't eat any leafy greens. Also, the participants who ate at least two weekly servings of fish had a 21% lower risk than people who ate less. The study doesn't prove cause and effect; however, leafy greens are high in zeaxanthin and lutein. In previous studies, these antioxidants have been shown to slow AMD in people with intermediate or advanced AMD.

Habits To Stave Off Dementia

Engage your brain: read; learn a new skill, language or instrument; do crossword puzzles. Get adequate sleep; the brain needs time to repair and remove built-up toxins every night. Limit sugar; Alzheimer's has been called "type 3 diabetes." Limiting processed foods will help reduce inflammation. Magnesium-rich foods and omega-3s may help protect cognitive function. Limit alcohol; it can affect the brain function and structure. Exercise; it helps keep oxygen-rich blood flowing to the brain and produces chemicals that promote brain health. Be socially active; it helps mental health and reduces cognitive decline.
