I wanted to highlight some important information from a Seminar I attended on-line recently through the American Society on Aging:
Aging in Place: Transforming Your Home into a Safe Haven
We all want to stay in the comfort of our own homes as we grow older. In fact, a recent presentation by Dr. Lakelyn Eichenberger, a renowned Gerontologist was invited to speak for the American Society on Aging, & revealed that 88% of people feel it is important to remain in their homes for as long as possible.
However, there is a significant gap between our desires and our home’s reality:
Only 10% of American homes are actually designed with aging in mind.
50% of aging adults have not yet taken steps to prepare their living spaces.
1 in 4 Americans over age 65 falls each year—making falls the leading cause of fatal and nonfatal injuries in older adults.
It's time to get ahead of the curve and prioritize safety before an accident happens!
Focus on the "Danger Zone": The Bathroom
Since 80% of falls occur in the bathroom, this is the most critical room for renovation. Consider these high-impact changes:
Grab Bars: Install ADA-compliant grab bars near the toilet and both inside/outside the shower. Pro-tip: Use a licensed professional for installation as walls may need reinforcement, and consult an Occupational Therapist (OT) for the ideal height.
Toilet Safety: Add an ADA-compliant or raised toilet seat to make transitions easier.
Visibility: Improve lighting with night lights or Smart lighting to navigate safely at night.
Tub/Shower Security: Use non-slip mats or adhesive decals, and consider a shower chair.
Simple Adjustments: Set your water heater to below 120°F to prevent burns, and store essentials at waist level to avoid reaching.
Hazard-Proofing the Whole Home
Beyond the bathroom, small environmental changes can drastically reduce tripping hazards like cords, clutter, and unstable furniture:
Clear Pathways: Remove throw rugs (unless secured) and ensure halls are wide enough for walkers or wheelchairs.
Smart Lighting: Install motion-sensing or Smart lighting throughout the house to guide your way in the evenings.
Organization: Keep your most-used items easily accessible to minimize the need for stools or bending.
Personal Wellness & Maintenance
Minimizing risk isn't just about the physical building; it's about your routine:
Stay Active: Prioritize strength, balance, and mobility exercises.
Health Checkups: Discuss fall risks and medication side effects with your healthcare provider regularly.
Proper Gear: Always wear supportive, non-slip footwear inside the home.
Vigilance: Conduct regular home safety assessments and stay on top of maintenance.
