The Austrian poet Rainer Marie Rilke once wrote, “no feeling is final.” He is speaking here to a very helpful truth, one that provides us courage to lean into and be shaped by the greatest joys, as well as to allow and grieve the deepest sorrows. Feelings are cues to our internal and relational landscapes, our hearts way of informing us of ache and angst, but they are always transient. They don’t stay forever, no matter how much we want them to or fear they will. That gives us freedom to experience them and grow through them without being defined by them.
