September is NICU Awareness Month, dedicated to those who care for and support the tiniest patients (and their families) in our Neonatal Intensive Care Units.

Methodist Children's Hospital has a Level 4 NICU, equipped to provide the highest level of care for the most critically ill and medically complex newborns, including those needing surgery, advanced imaging or specialized heart-lung support. Sanjie Garza-Cox, MD, the hospital's neonatal transport medical director, spoke to KSAT 12 & KSAT.com about why newborns may need NICU care and what parents can expect: https://bit.ly/47Apspk

Nurse leader Manisha Gajera, BSN, RN, says her passion for helping others was shaped by her mother, who spent her life helping neighbors access health care in their village in Gujarat, India. After moving to the U.S., Manisha recognized her chance to make an even greater impact and followed her calling to become a nurse.

Years later, as director of the Progressive Care Unit at Methodist Hospital | Northeast, Manisha had the opportunity to care for a patient whose roots traced back to the same region of India as her family. They connected quickly, and he shared that he missed the comforts of home, especially traditional meals.

Wanting to lift his spirits, Manisha turned to the person who first inspired her: her mother. Without hesitation, her mother arranged for the delivery of healthy dishes with origins from home. The simple gesture of community quickly grew into a heartfelt connection, reminding us of the power of compassion.

Methodist Healthcare System teamed up with the San Antonio Zoo to bring a splash of hydration education to families and kids this summer. Our Hydration Education Station was a hit, with more than 800 visitors! We handed out more than 700 commemorative Methodist Healthcare/Zoo water bottles that were immediately put to good use.

Did you know? A rhinoceros needs 20 gallons of water a day to stay hydrated. We used a large tub filled with 20 gallons to give visitors a clear, visual sense of just how much that really is.

In comparison, adults need about 64 ounces of water daily, and children need around 40 ounces. Some may need more or less water depending on their age, activity level, and the weather. Parents and caregivers should keep an eye on hydration habits and encourage regular water intake, especially during playtime or on hot days.

Thanks to everyone who stopped by — we loved connecting with you and sharing this important message. Stay hydrated! Heat-related illness? Our emergency rooms are open 24/7 to help. Find a location at SAHealth.com/ER.

Meet Kenny. He’s one of millions of Americans who are about to face a major increase in health insurance costs – and most don’t even know it yet.

Enhanced Premium Tax Credits (EPTCs) are currently helping 24 million people – including our patients – afford high-quality healthcare coverage through the insurance Marketplace (https://bit.ly/4klc7E1). These tax credits are applied directly to people’s premiums, keeping coverage affordable and making healthcare more accessible. But unless Congress acts soon, these tax credits will expire at the end of 2025.

“When you get sick and you’re not rich, health insurance is absolutely essential. It doesn’t just make life easier, it makes life possible,” said Kenny. “Losing the healthcare tax credit would mean my monthly costs would go through the roof, and I wouldn’t be able to afford my treatments. I need Congress to extend the healthcare tax credit and give people in towns like mine a fighting chance.”

Without EPTCs, health insurance costs will skyrocket. Families may be forced to make heartbreaking choices – between keeping their health coverage or paying for food, rent and childcare. Learn how you can help protect access to care at https://bit.ly/3ZTvAo3
