Congratulations to the Methodist Children's Hospital Emergency Department for receiving the ENA® Lantern Award®.

It is with great honor to share that the Methodist Children’s Hospital Emergency Department has received the ENA® Lantern Award®.

The ENA (Emergency Nurses Association) bestows the Lantern Award on emergency departments that exemplify exceptional practice and innovative performance in the core areas of nursing leadership, practice, education, advocacy, and research.

“This prestigious award truly reflects the commitment to excellence from our nursing leadership and teamwork within Methodist Children’s Hospital’s Emergency Department to provide exceptional patient care,” said Rachel Goldsmith, CEO of Methodist Children’s Hospital.

Methodist Children’s Hospital is one of 96 emergency departments across the United States to receive this award, which is less than two percent of all emergency departments in the country.

“I am overjoyed to see the hard work and dedication from our emergency nurses recognized on a national level,” said Negar Johnson, Chief Nursing Officer of Methodist Children’s Hospital. “While it’s exciting to be recognized, it’s fulfilling to know the work we are doing is directly impacting the quality of emergency care we are providing to our pediatric community, which is our whole reason for doing what we do.”

Meet Jessica. She’s a cancer survivor and her daughter has Type 1 diabetes. They’re among millions of Americans who are about to face a major increase in health insurance costs.

Enhanced Premium Tax Credits (EPTCs) are currently helping 24 million people – including our patients – afford high-quality healthcare coverage through the insurance Marketplace (https://bit.ly/40pvfK0). Americans who purchase insurance on their own and rely on the tax credit are now facing skyrocketing costs if Congress allows the credit to expire at the end of 2025, putting at risk the health of children like Jessica’s daughter.

“We were living a perfectly normal life, and we suddenly had a child that had a chronic illness,” said Jessica. “We’re not wealthy. Money can get tight…we need Congress to take action now. It’s vital for us.”

“In responding to this tragic event, we recognize the needs of those impacted will go beyond meeting their immediate survival needs but also beginning the process of rebuilding lives and communities that were devastated." - Jaime Wesolowski, President & CEO of Methodist Healthcare Ministries.

Meet Kenny. He’s one of millions of Americans who are about to face a major increase in health insurance costs – and most don’t even know it yet.

Enhanced Premium Tax Credits (EPTCs) are currently helping 24 million people – including our patients – afford high-quality healthcare coverage through the insurance Marketplace (https://bit.ly/4klc7E1). These tax credits are applied directly to people’s premiums, keeping coverage affordable and making healthcare more accessible. But unless Congress acts soon, these tax credits will expire at the end of 2025.

“When you get sick and you’re not rich, health insurance is absolutely essential. It doesn’t just make life easier, it makes life possible,” said Kenny. “Losing the healthcare tax credit would mean my monthly costs would go through the roof, and I wouldn’t be able to afford my treatments. I need Congress to extend the healthcare tax credit and give people in towns like mine a fighting chance.”

Without EPTCs, health insurance costs will skyrocket. Families may be forced to make heartbreaking choices – between keeping their health coverage or paying for food, rent and childcare. Learn how you can help protect access to care at https://bit.ly/3ZTvAo3

In a powerful display of unity, remembrance, hope, and support, we raised the Donate Life America flag this week at Methodist Hospital | Atascosa. Donate Life Month is observed every April to raise awareness of the importance of organ, eye, and tissue donation and to honor those who gave the gift of life.

We were honored to be joined by Virginia Lira, the 1,000th liver transplant recipient in the Methodist Hospital | Specialty and Transplant program, and a former patient and friend to our Methodist Hospital | Atascosa family. Virginia's story is a testament to the enduring hope that organ donors provide and their lasting legacy.

Our team is excited to announce that Melanie Roberts (Emergency Department, RN) was recently awarded as the DAISY Award Winner at Methodist Hospital | Atascosa!

She was nominated by a former patient who said: “I have never had such a satisfying episode of care in my life, at any facility. I'm a former nurse, and I also work with nurses every day in my current position. I say completely without reservation that nurses like Melanie are rare…she is at another level, a truly great nurse and human being.”

We are so thankful to have Melanie as part of our Methodist Hospital | Atascosa family!

The DAISY Award is a recognition program to celebrate and recognize nurses by collecting nominations from patients, families, and co-workers. This is a way to thank nurses for the care and kindness they provide.
