There’s something powerful about having inclusive spaces in our community.
During our karate session, participants grew not only in strength, but also in confidence, trying pushups, practicing kicks, and landing punches on the bag like pros in the making.

You could feel it in the room, that spark, the joy!

A huge thank you to and Sensei Nathan for creating such a welcoming, empowering space. What a fantastic experience!

Southeast Alaska Independent Living (SAIL) is grateful to the Hoonah community for partnering with us to replace the ramp at the Senior Center. This project reflects the power of collaboration and care for elders and people with disabilities.

Gunalchéesh to Maxine Nakamura for her advocacy; Bill Wolfe Jr. for taking the measurements for Kasilof Wood & Metal to build the ramp; Jim Dybdahl for helping catalyze the installation; and Joe Jr. Cornell and Levi Woodbury for completing the installation.

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness and take action.

People with disabilities, especially those with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD), face significantly higher risks of sexual violence. Additionally, for individuals who use sign language or alternative and augmentative communication, reporting systems are not always designed to be accessible.

In Sitka, SAIL hosts a Disability Abuse Response Team (DART). A collaborative network of local partners, including DV/SA agencies, disability service providers, Tribal entities, mental health professionals, law enforcement, and more. Together, they share resources, problem-solve, and strengthen support systems so survivors with disabilities can access the services they deserve.

If you or someone you know has experienced abuse, SAIL is here to help

Some of our staff had the honor of being part of Project Homeless Connect, standing alongside an incredible network of partners to support our community.

We’re deeply grateful to be part of a place that shows up for one another, where care, connection, and dignity are at the center. Gatherings like this remind us that when we come together, we make our community stronger and ensure no one has to face hardship alone.

Gunalchéesh, Háw’aa to everyone who shared their time, care, and heart.

They generously donated 8 pairs of Nordic skis, helping our participants glide into new experiences and confidence. We are so grateful for this kind donation and the community spirit behind it.

April is Autism Awareness Month, and the community has been clear: awareness isn't enough. Real inclusion means listening to autistic people, following their lead, and building spaces where they don't have to mask who they are to belong.

So what does acceptance look like in practice? It might mean designing classrooms, workplaces, and public spaces that account for sensory differences. It might mean listening to autistic people when they advocate for themselves, rather than speaking over them. It might mean letting a child stim without shame, or giving a colleague the flexibility they need to do their best work. It might simply mean extending patience and curiosity instead of judgment.

This month (and every month), let's move from awareness → acceptance → action.
