Happy National Nurses Week!

This year’s theme from the American Nurses Association, is “the power of nurses” and we can’t think of a more appropriate way to celebrate this special group of people!

Not only do they have the power to care but also, the power to advocate, to lead, to show up every single time with both clinical expertise and never-ending compassion.

Nurses are the heartbeat of healthcare. The ones who hold hands, who listen, who support, who ease nerves, and still somehow find the energy to go above and beyond at the end of every shift for others.

This week is also a moment to honor every nurse who has ever worn these scrubs. The trailblazers who pushed the profession forward. The educators who shaped the next generation. The advocates who fought for better care. And to every nurse who showed up, day after day, and made a difference in someone's life.

To every nurse out there: this week belongs to you.

May marks the start of Mental Health Awareness Month, a nationwide initiative that has been observed since 1949 and is dedicated to raising awareness, sharing resources, and supporting the individuals and communities who need it most.

At the Beach House, we're proud to stand alongside the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) in championing the four cornerstones of this key time in the healthcare calendar:

• Understanding Mental Illness
• Early Support Matters
• Words Matter & Words Can Heal
• Connection Is a Powerful Form of Care

This week, with Understanding Mental Illness.

Mental health conditions are medical conditions. They are not character flaws. They are not signs of weakness. and the people living with them are so much more than any diagnosis. When we lead with understanding, we create space for people to seek help. We build workplaces, families, and communities where no one has to suffer in silence.

Recovery is possible. Healing is possible. And it starts with understanding.

Life experiences have a powerful way of shaping how we see others, listen more deeply, and connect with empathy and understanding. We believe that some of the most meaningful care comes from individuals who bring both professional expertise and lived experience to their work.

As part of our Care Family Focus, we are proud to highlight our Alumni Wellness Coordinator, Heather Conner, and the powerful “why” that fuels her each day.

“My career has always been centered around people. Long before I began working in addiction recovery, I spent years in customer service and sales roles that required patience, communication, problem‑solving, and a genuine desire to support others. Helping people navigate difficult moments has always come naturally to me, but what truly led me into the recovery field was my own lived experience.

Addiction shaped my life for many years, and long‑term recovery ultimately reshaped it. That journey allows me to connect with others on a deeper level, meeting them with empathy, honesty, and a shared understanding that can’t be taught in a classroom.

Outside of work, I stay grounded through spiritual practices that help maintain my emotional and spiritual balance. Prayer, meditation, journaling, and daily study of the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous and the Bible keep me centered and aligned with my values.

One of my proudest accomplishments has been returning to Beach House as an Alumni Coordinator, the exact same place where my own recovery began.

After 15 years of struggling and attending multiple treatment centers, the Beach House Center for Recovery became sacred ground for me. When I first arrived, I was terrified and far from home. Discovering that the area is known for sea turtle nesting reminded me of my roots in Hawaii and felt like a moment of reassurance that I was exactly where I needed to be.

Today, my mission is to ensure that every alum knows they matter that they are seen, remembered, supported, and always part of our recovery community long after they leave treatment.”

As part of our Care Family Focus, we are proud to highlight our Alumni Wellness Coordinator Courtney LaManna, and what drives her each day.

"I’ve always felt my calling was to work in spaces where people feel supported, seen, and connected especially within recovery and mental health.

Almost from day one, my career has been rooted in the behavioral health and addiction recovery field, and in my role, I focus on staying connected with clients during treatment and long after they graduate.

My background includes coursework and training in behavioral health, addiction recovery, peer support, and mental health focused care. I am also in recovery myself, which allows me to approach this work with empathy, understanding, and authenticity. I continue to grow through hands-on experience, professional development, and ongoing education in both the mental health and recovery space.

One of my proudest accomplishments has been building meaningful relationships and watching our alumni grow, heal, and thrive, in their sobriety, their emotional wellness, and their mental health. Long term recovery is built on connection, consistency, compassion, and access to mental health support.

Everyone’s journey looks different, and meeting people where they are both emotionally and mentally is essential to building positive outcomes.

Beach House holds a special place in my heart because of its genuine commitment to treating the whole person with dignity, care, and respect. Being part of a team that values both recovery and mental health makes this work deeply meaningful to me.

My goal is to help our alumni feel seen, supported, and never alone after treatment. I also value being a support system for families, helping them navigate the emotional and mental health challenges that often accompany recovery.

Through alumni outreach, community connection, ongoing check‑ins, and recovery initiatives, I aim to strengthen relationships and foster a community where healing, mental wellness, and long‑term recovery can flourish.

Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my boyfriend, friends, my cats (and my spider 😊), getting outdoors, and doing things that help me stay grounded.

This allows us to deliver a true continuum of care - Residential Treatment (RT), Partial Hospitalization (PHP), and Intensive Outpatient Services (IOP) - all within a clinically guided care ecosystem.

This milestone strengthens our ability to better partner with providers, clients, and their families in delivering comprehensive, compassionate care at every step of the way.

Why Our Continuum of Care Matters to Patients

As part of our Care Family Focus, we are proud to highlight Toran Jones, and the powerful “why” that fuels his commitment to guiding individuals and families toward healing and recovery.

I believe recovery really starts when feelings are heard.

At Beach House Center for Recovery, I work closely with individuals and families to help them understand their options, reduce fear, and help them take the first step toward real change. Many of the people I speak with are calling during one of the hardest moments of their lives, and I approach every conversation with patience, clarity, and compassion so they know they don’t have to face it alone.

My connection to this work comes from my own life and my own experiences. I grew up in a family affected by addiction and mental health struggles, and I saw firsthand how deeply it impacts everyone around the person suffering. Those experiences shaped the way I show up for people today with honesty, understanding, and urgency when someone asks for help.

Today, I focus on helping people find the right level of care and removing the barriers that often delay treatment. I strive to make the process feel human rather than clinical, ensuring people are not just placed somewhere, but connected to a place where they have the best chance to succeed.

You never know when you are going to make a difference. I once called a patient who was scheduled to admit, simply to check in and make sure she was supported before arrival. Some time later, I unexpectedly ran into her at a community event. She shared that her life had changed for the better and that the very weekend we had spoken, she had been planning to end her life before coming into treatment. She told me that our call made her pause and reconsider. Moments like that remind me why this work matters. A conversation that feels routine to us can be life-changing to someone else.

My goal is simple: to help people not only get into recovery but stay there.

As part of our Care Family Focus series, we’re excited to highlight Jessica Stroud, our Director of Alumni Wellness at Beach House Center for Recovery. A proud alumna whose journey shaped her calling, Jessica leads with compassion, faith, and lived experience as she supports individuals transitioning into lasting recovery.

In my role, I both serve and support individuals as they transition out of treatment and into lives rooted in connection, emotional growth, and long-term stability. I am also a proud alumna of the Beach House program. Experiencing recovery firsthand within this community shaped not only my life, but my calling, and continues to fuel my commitment to walking closely with others on their recovery journey.

Two of my greatest passions in life have always been faith and helping people find freedom through recovery. For many years, those passions ran parallel, until they ultimately met in the middle. I found my own lasting recovery through faith, and that intersection is what led me to launch Faith & Recovery in November 2024. What began as a simple act of discipline grew into an established offering within our program, currently meeting six nights a week, with plans to expand into a full faith-based program in the spring.

Before entering the behavioral health field, my career began in corporate America. After completing treatment, I joined Beach House as a Behavioral Health Technician and later as a Patient Care Coordinator, where I supported clients through crisis and witnessed powerful transformations at their most vulnerable moments. These experiences confirmed my calling to this work and led me into leadership roles, including Manager of Behavioral Health Services, where I emphasized patience, compassion, and human connection as foundational to healing.

While my education is deeply rooted in lived experience, I have continually refined my approach through ongoing involvement in treatment programs and the recovery community. My philosophy of long-term recovery is centered on faith, service, and intentional community. I believe sustainable sobriety is built when individuals are supported spiritually, emotionally, and relationally.

Beyond my work at Beach House, I am actively involved in community outreach through River Church West Palm Beach, where my team and I share recovery testimonies and provide essential resources to those in need.

Whether supporting alumni, collaborating with staff, or serving the community, my mission remains the same: to create spaces where faith and recovery come together to support lasting sobriety, healing, and hope.

At Beach House Center for Recovery, we are proud to stand alongside SAMHSA in advancing this mission. All month long, we’re highlighting the four cornerstones of this important healthcare initiative: Starting Fresh, Multiple Pathways to Recovery, Wraparound Services, and Treatment‑Friendly Communities.

Week Four: Treatment Friendly Communities

As we close out Week Four, we turn our focus to one of the most powerful forces in the recovery journey: community. Healing doesn’t happen in isolation. Recovery is strengthened, sustained, and often made possible by the people and environments that surround us. Treatment‑friendly communities transform lives by one connection, one conversation, and one act of support at a time.

When individuals feel seen, supported, and welcomed rather than judged or dismissed, everything changes. Not only does this encouragement make treatment more accessible, it helps break the cycle of substance use for future generations.

This is the vision our Alumni Team carries so passionately. Every day, they work to build networks of belonging, hope, and shared experience. Through their Peer‑to‑Peer Support Groups, they create safe spaces where people can speak openly, learn from one another, and walk the path of recovery together.

National Substance Use Disorder Treatment Month, a nationwide initiative led by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).

Throughout the month, communities and organizations come together to raise awareness about the effectiveness of evidence‑based treatment and to reduce the barriers that prevent individuals from accessing care.

Week Three: Wraparound Services

Recovery thrives when a person’s basic needs are met. Access to childcare, safe housing, mental health services, and family support plays a crucial role in long‑term success. Wraparound services ensure individuals have the stability and resources they need to stay engaged in their recovery journey.
