I'm a therapist who specializes in and has ADHD. I get it. I'm now referring to this as my Merlin mindset. My little dog can be Archimedes rolling her eyes at me and dishing sass. (If someone knows who to credit for this image and original text please tag them thank you)

Balance is important. People around my age (I'm 33) grew up with media telling us that normal and healthy and honestly still small bodies were 'fat' and that was 'bad' and a lot of us developed fears of certain foods as a result of this and the absolutely s**t diet culture that was pushed on us. Starvation diets, juice cleanses- UGH just no.

Add to the confusion and feelings of guilt and shame about foods that many people with ADHD crave sugars in different ways than neurotypicals. Refined sugars provide fast dopamine rewards and we can become reliant on refined sugars because the quick dopamine release is actually helpful for our focus regulation. ...I know. Fun stuff.

Many of us (myself included) have gone in extremes where we either avoid these foods at all costs (I had an absolute gym rat period where I refused to touch anything I deemed 'unhealthy'. Trust that this too is unhealthy) or we become so dysregulated and struggle so much in our lives overall that they become the majority of our diet. And don't get me wrong, I stand by that any food is better than no food. Any day. This is a hill I'll die on. If this is all you can eat, do it and honestly I'm proud of you for it.

My point though, is that finding balance can be hard when we've been taught to think in extremes and that some foods are "bad" and that if we consume them we'll be bad because we'll be fat which is also "bad".

Do I love the gym and healthy foods? Yes. Do I love watching Bob's Burgers and eating cookies? Also yes.

This is a weekly tradition with my child now. We have a dessert food for breakfast on Saturdays and watch cartoons together. We also do yoga and make protein shakes together.

When we normalize different types of foods as PART of a healthy lifestyle rather than something that de-rails it, we promote balance and true healthy living, emotionally and physically. This is something we can teach our kids and it's something we can teach our inner child.

Also shout out my kid stans this French Toast cookie and the Toffee Sea Salt slaps ๐Ÿ’•

๐ŸŒ™โœจ Late Night Reflections โœจ๐ŸŒ™

As I sit here embracing the quiet of the night, I find myself reflecting on the transformative power of shadow work and its profound impact, particularly for those navigating life with ADHD. Shadow work invites us to explore the hidden parts of ourselvesโ€”the fears, insecurities, and patterns we often try to ignore. This process can be especially enlightening for individuals with ADHD, helping them understand their unique minds and embrace their authenticity.

Professionally, many of us have been taught to conform to rigid standards. But through my own journey, I've learned that authenticity and professionalism can coexist beautifully. It's about deprogramming those outdated notions and defining what professionalism means for ourselves. This realization encouraged me to step into my visibility and authenticity and I am so much better for it. Bringing that to social media is another fun journey in deprogramming and redefining and I'm here for it.

Sharing this space with you allows me to be real as I discuss mental health. Just like being real is required for healing, authenticity is needed to form genuine connections with others. Authenticity isn't just a buzzword; it's a radical act of self-acceptance and love.

So here's to late nights of introspection, to embracing our shadows, and to boldly redefining what it means to be professional in our own unique ways. ๐ŸŒŸ

Goodnight, beautiful souls. ๐ŸŒ™๐Ÿ’ซ

With ADHD, hyperactivity isn't only external. It can be internal. For many women, this is how our hyperactivity presents and why our ADHD is often missed during childhood, leading to later diagnoses. We mask symptoms and strive to keep up, feeling overwhelmed and seeking help when we can't anymore.

In childhood, boys with ADHD often show external hyperactivity, which teachers find disruptive which leads to recommendations for assessments. This often isn't approached well either (basically teaching boys to mask symptoms rather than manage and accept and like themselves) which can disadvantage boys too. More on this later in another post. In contrast, girls often seem calmer externally, flying under the radar out of fear of getting in trouble for struggles with things like organization and focus. We live with a hundred browser tabs open in our minds, making our 'normal' far from calm.

When diagnosed later in life, we realize how much we've masked and overcompensated, unaware there's another way to be. Caregivers might not notice either, possibly sharing similar struggles due to ADHD's likely genetic component. True calm might be something we rarely experience.

Imagine the possibility of sitting still without a mental to-do list, watching a show without compulsively scrolling through social media. ADHD varies widely, and the current diagnostic criteria and tests aren't perfect for everyone. ADHD can look so different from person to person and this won't apply to all boys, girls, men, women, etc.

If any of this resonates with you, it can be tough. Let's talk about it. My DMs are open, or you can call/text 561-225-4178.

Are 'about me' posts really complete without a selfie? ๐Ÿ“ธ (no)

Iโ€™m Nicole - a values-based psychotherapist who will probably always like punk rock, teaches yoga, and occasionally drops an F-bomb in sessions. ๐Ÿค˜๐Ÿป๐Ÿค

A Little About Me:
- Focus Areas: Self-esteem, shadow work, ADHD, anxiety, and navigating relationships. I worked in substance use for years and enjoy working with people in recovery. I also like working with other therapists as clients. I see kids ages 12+, adults, families, and couples.
- Personality: My MBTI is ENFP, so basically a mix of bubbly enthusiasm and deep introspection. Imagine Raven and Starfire from Teen Titans Go were one person.
- Interests: Art, poetry, books, bats (they're adorable and super helpful pollinators), nerdy things in general, health and fitness, the beach (I grew up in Jupiter, so of course), and making healing a fun (yet serious) adventure.

Therapy with Me:
In our sessions, weโ€™ll dig deep, laugh hard, and sometimes cuss a little (or a lot). Iโ€™m all about being authentic and fiercely supportive - think of me as your straight-talking, kind-hearted cheerleader.

I believe healing should be as fun as it is serious. Weโ€™ll tackle those shadowy parts of yourself with a mix of humor and hard truths. Plus, if youโ€™re dealing with ADHD, I get it - Iโ€™ve got plenty of creative tips to keep us on track.

Why Iโ€™m Here:
Iโ€™m all about living a healthy, balanced life, and I want that for you too. Sometimes I neglect my professional Instagram because visibility can be uncomfortable and weird, but Iโ€™m working through it. Just like Iโ€™ll help you work through your stuff.

Letโ€™s Connect:
DM me if you want to chat, schedule a session, or just share your favorite punk rock song. You can also call or text me at 561-225-4178 to discuss working together. Healing isn't a solo journey - weโ€™re in this together.
