Dr. Ricardo Mejia is one of the only M.D.’s that is fellowship trained in hair transplantation, board certified in Dermatology and Dermatologic Surgery, and a Diplomat of the American Board of Hair Restoration Surgery. He is an experienced dermatologic surgeon whose primary goal is to produce world class hair restoration with proven consistent hair growth and hair yield. He is one of the only Medical Doctors to be featured in a 30 minute CNN Live Broadcast on hair loss and hair transplantation that was broadcast in the U.S. His emphasis is on ultra refined hair transplantation to provide quality results, undetectable hairlines and density in a single, one-pass session. He is one of few physicians certified by the American Board of Hair Restoration Surgery and one of few who has completed an intensive fellowship in hair restoration surgery. He is published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology and has served as faculty instructor at the Live Hair Transplant Surgery Workshops. Happy New Year! 🎉

As the 2024–2025 President of the ISHRS, a global non-profit Society, I had the privilege this past year of traveling around the globe, not just to speak and teach, but to spend time with friends and colleagues who share a deep passion for hair restoration and patient care. Together, at live surgery workshops across many countries, our members collectively moved and placed millions of hair follicles, advancing our field one patient at a time.

What made this year truly special was the collegiality, the conversations in operating rooms, lecture halls, and over shared meals; the generosity with which knowledge was exchanged; and the genuine friendships that continue to define the ISHRS. Across borders and cultures, the Society remains united by mutual respect, collaboration, and a shared commitment to excellence.

I am incredibly proud to have served as President with a guiding theme of Unity, and deeply grateful to call so many of you not just colleagues, but friends.

Dr. Takata demos the Hair Matrix Device live on a patient. This device is a detailed AI-assisted analysis that measures hair density, miniaturization, and scalp condition across multiple areas including the frontal region, temporal zones, and crown. This gives us an accurate baseline before starting any hair treatment plan.

In this patient’s case, the evaluation showed mostly terminal hairs and minimal miniaturization, meaning there is no evidence of androgenetic alopecia. So the suggested treatment is to start Minoxidil and possibly other non surgical treatments such as the Ted Ultrasound.

Lichen Planopilaris (LPP) is an autoimmune condition that causes inflammation and scarring of the scalp often beginning along the frontal hairline. Over time, this inflammation can destroy hair follicles, leading to permanent hair loss if not treated promptly.

At this stage, for this patient, Drs. Mejia and Takata do not recommend hair transplant surgery. Instead they will focus on calming the scalp.

Various treatment options for this type of condition may include topical or injected steroids, dutasteride, red light therapy, platelet rich plasma (PRP) or other medical agents.

Dr. Luciana Takata and Dr. Ricardo Mejia planned a follicular unit excision (FUE) for a patient who previously underwent an FUT (strip) hair transplant.

Their goal was to carefully extract grafts around the existing scar without overharvesting the donor area. Using a coverage value assessment, they calculated how many grafts could be safely extracted to achieve optimal density while preserving donor strength.

In a later session, the scar will be treated with micropigmentation to further enhance the final result.

Last month, I traveled to Tashkent, Uzbekistan for the Los Angeles Hair Restoration Courses Tashkent meeting.

I had the opportunity to share insights as ISHRS President and connect with colleagues dedicated to advancing education in our field.

I’ll be heading to Berlin this week for the ISHRS 33rd World Congress, where our global community officially gathers to continue fostering collaboration, education, and ethical standards in hair restoration.

✨ From welcoming baby Anderson to welcoming her patients back, Ashley’s return comes with a relatable topic for many new moms!

In this video, Dr. Luciana Takata explains postpartum hair shedding, known as telogen effluvium. This is a temporary condition that often appears around three months after delivery. 👶🏼 If you notice extra hair on your pillow, in the shower, or on your brush, you might also be experiencing telogen effluvium, but don’t worry, it typically resolves on its own within six to twelve months.

To check for shedding, try the simple “pull test”: gently pull about 50 hairs and if you notice more than 5–6 strands, that’s a sign of temporary shedding.

We posted a video the other day with Dr. Mejia’s son doing a “consult,” all in fun. This time, Dr. Mejia consults with Dr. Takata as he is seriously considering a hair transplant himself - for the first time!

While he has good hair density overall, her recommendation is to keep things natural - lowering the hairline just enough. She explains how balance and natural irregularities make all the difference in designing a hairline.

Stay tuned for updates, of course if he has time to get the surgery in his busy schedule.
