Cremation and Catholic Tradition 🕊

In the Catholic faith, the human body—created in the image and likeness of God—is treated with deep reverence, both in life and in death. When cremation is chosen, the Church teaches that the cremated remains must be laid to rest on consecrated grounds. This sacred practice reflects the same love and honor shown to Jesus, who was reverently placed in the tomb following His death. By entrusting our loved ones to a Catholic cemetery, we not only uphold the dignity of their earthly remains, but also profess our enduring hope in the Resurrection and eternal life. 🙏

In the profound wisdom of Sacred Scripture, we find comfort in the eternal truth that transcends our earthly sorrow. At Catholic Cemeteries of Chicago, each beloved name becomes woven into the fabric of eternity. 🙏

"Their bodies are buried in peace, but their name lives on and on." -Sirach 44:14

Peace of Mind, Tradition and Faith

The history of Catholic Cemeteries in the Archdiocese of Chicago began with the first Catholic cemetery; St. James, Sag Bridge established in 1837. We, the women and men of the Catholic Cemeteries, assist the Archbishop of Chicago in caring for the faithful departed by performing the most ancient corporal work of mercy – the burial of the dead. We pride ourselves in offering Peace of Mind, Tradition and Faith in the services we offer at our 45 cemeteries throughout Cook and Lake counties.
