I was chosen to participate in the Indigenous Lactation Peer Counselor training in Arizona in the Diné Nation (Navajo land) May 25 - 29! I am so grateful and excited to add additional wisdom and skills to my credentials to bring to the communities I serve! I’m equally exploding with joy and gratitude to be on this land with these people that are of my mother’s lineage, to reconnect with what was severed from us and honor our ancestors and heal and transform the negative information!

I’ve already breastfed 4 of my 5 children, for a combined 11.5 years total, received training and certification in lactation and body feeding and supported many families throughout their experiences but this one with be very special for me!💖🙏
What was your baby feeding experience? Did you have support and education?
What would you have loved to have or know?
Are you planning to breast/chest feed?
How long would you like to nurse?
Would you prefer to pump?
Do you know the benefits of breast-feeding?

There can be confusing and conflicting information regarding the safety of consuming caffeine during pregnancy. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and many other entities and care professionals recommend eliminating or at minimum, limiting caffeine intake to less than 200mg per day, which is about one 12-ounce cup of coffee (depending on brand and strength).

Professor Jack James, of Reykjavik University, Iceland, identified 1,261 English language peer-reviewed articles linking caffeine and caffeinated beverages to pregnancy outcomes “substantial cumulative evidence of an association between maternal caffeine consumption and diverse negative pregnancy outcomes, Specifically, the cumulative scientific evidence supports pregnant people and those contemplating pregnancy being advised to avoid caffeine!"
Caffeine crosses the placenta and neither the fetus nor the placenta can metabolize caffeine as they lack the enzymes! According to the analysis of observational studies published in BMJ Evidence Based Medicine, those who are pregnant or trying to conceive should be advised to completely avoid caffeine because the evidence suggests that maternal caffeine consumption is associated with negative pregnancy outcomes and that there is no safe level of consumption. So what does that mean? According a plethora of research studies, endocrinology and metabolism research and more, consuming caffeine causes many issues during and after pregnancy :
* increase in maternal catecholamine (dopamine, norepinephrine, and epinephrine) levels
* impacts hormone, adrenal and kidney function in pregnant person and fetus
* risk for intrauterine growth restriction
* incidence of spontaneous miscarriage
* impair fetal oxygenation
* increased fetal heart rate and placental vasoconstriction
* can change important brain pathways that could lead to behavioral and developmental issues later in life
* induce epigenetic changes in the developing fetus or even the germ cells to cause adult-onset diseases in subsequent generations
* childhood overweight and obesity
* childhood acute leukemia
