Mahalo to Maui Hanamatsuri Association & Wailuku Hongwanji. 🫶🏽

💫 As we honor 80 years of caring for Maui’s kūpuna, we’re grateful for this special gift and the generations of support behind it! 👏🏼

In 1942, during WWII, kūpuna in need of care were relocated to the Young Buddhist Association (YBA) Hall at Wailuku Hongwanji. After the war, the YBA community raised funds and, through volunteer labor, helped build the first Hale Makua Home in 1946, and it was opened in 1947.

🌟 Today, that same spirit lives on. This is more than a donation, it’s a legacy of community, compassion, and care.

🎓 Growing Leaders, Strengthening Care. 🫶🏽👏🏼

Congratulations to our incredible leaders at Hale Makua who recently graduated from a pilot leadership training program for Ohana Pacific Health

Leaders from Kahului, Wailuku, and Home Health by Ohana Pacific Health began this journey in October, diving into interactive sessions led by Kellie Chun (Where You Evolve) and OPH Director of Culture, Trevor Carpenter. Together, they built essential leadership skills like reflective listening, navigating conflict, influencing accountability, and leading change in the workplace.

Through meaningful discussions, hands-on activities, and real-world role-playing, our leaders strengthened the tools they use every day to support their teams and enhance the care we provide.

💬 “We really wanted to invest in our leadership because they have the greatest influence on our teams and the care we provide,” shared Wes Lo, CEO of OPH and Hale Makua. “Our hope is that their growth and success will positively impact the employees they manage and, ultimately, the people we serve.”

On April 2, we celebrated Hale Makua Day across all of our service lines! We recognized not only how far we’ve come as one organization, but the people who make it all possible...our staff! 🎉

⚡️This year’s celebration was especially meaningful as we mark our 80th Anniversary. Employees received commemorative Hale Makua t-shirts, symbolizing our shared pride and legacy of care. 🧡💚

Staff also received Chex Mix, representing the many different roles, backgrounds, and teams that come together to create something truly special.

Just like the mix, each of you plays an important part in who we are today.

💫 This Long-Term Care Administrator Week, we’re spotlighting Kayla Phillips and her inspiring journey with Hale Makua. What began as a summer internship at Hale Makua in 2022 grew into a full-time career, a master’s degree in healthcare management, completion of the Administrator-in-Training program at Hale Makua, passing her administrator licensing exam last year, which led to a well-deserved promotion at Hale Makua to Assistant Administrator!

We got a sweet donation of a handful of Lafufus! Some of our residents pulled lucky numbers and won a Lafufu. Ms. Laurie here was happy to discover her Lafufu was her favorite color!
