🎉 Congratulations to Angie Saiki, RN on 45 amazing years with Hale Makua!

A few weeks ago we celebrated Angie's 45 years of service at Hale Makua, and it was very clear to see that Angie truly loves her job here. “Hale Makua is my bread and butter,” Angie said, sharing how her career here helped her raise her family, see her kids through college, and travel the world, from Jerusalem to Turkey and Greece! 🌍

Angie considers her residents and co-workers family, and for 15 years she even served as Hale Makua’s nurses union representative, advocating for her fellow nurses and helping make our workplace better for everyone.

Mahalo Angie for your incredible dedication and heart. You are such a special part of our Hale Makua ohana! 💙

🌺Happy Aloha Friday!🤙 Here's a cute story from the other day...

It was just your typical craft sale fundraiser day at Hale Makua Kahului this past Wednesday, with residents and employees flocking in and out of the Aloha Cafe, picking out their favorite ono treats to buy. But this time, something else was happening in the midst of all the commotion. In the corner of the room, beyond the hustle and bustle of busy shoppers, came the sweet sounds of the ukulele. It was one of our residents, Keoni Darisay, performing a soothing and beautiful melody.

Keoni, who had come to Hale Makua for care after being treated at the hospital for sepsis, was singing an ad lib version of Larry Graham’s “One in a Million You”. Except he wasn’t singing about a person. He was singing about Hale Makua!

“Life showed compassion and sent to me, God sent to me, a stroke of love called Hale Makua,” he sang.

After playing his music, Keoni shared about his wonderful experience at Hale Makua. “Get so much aloha here,” he said. “I no need worry. All the nurses and assistants, everybody over here is so awesome. So friendly and so thorough. They know what you need.”

That day, Keoni received the green light from the doctor to return home to Hana. His last order of business before he left was to share his musical gift with the staff and residents at the craft sale. There among the empanadas, laulau, gandule rice, cookies, banana bread, and other sweets, the most special treat we got that day came from Keoni’s heart and his soulful vocals.

🎉Today is Masao Motooka's 💯th Birthday! We’re so honored to be able to provide care to a true hero and living legend like Masa, and to celebrate this incredible milestone with him. Masa is a Nisei World War II veteran and recipient of the Congressional Gold Medal, and even witnessed the attack on Pearl Harbor at just 16 years old. He later went on to serve as a Japanese interpreter in the U.S. Army during the war. While his life story is extraordinary, it’s the lasting impression he leaves on his family, friends, and everyone who meets him that truly defines his legacy. We all love him at Hale Makua!
