In this blog recently published by ACBC, I seek to define friendship in being a friend like Christ as well as to point out ways our flesh can often get in the way of the rich blessing of godly friendships.

A friend at best is always a friend like Christ, seeking how we can serve rather than be served. Imitating His heart and His ways should be our aim in friendship. http://ow.ly/3l9S50GKNfv

Thank you ACBC for another wonderful annual conference. We have been sharpened and reignited to study and minister God's word!

Misguided hope comes when we believe that our experiences supersede a need to rely on the sufficiency of Scripture.

Dear Friends of the BCCM,

With a sad heart, I am writing to let you know that our 3rd Annual Fundraiser “Spam Jamz Event” is cancelled. We have prayed, sought counsel from our elders at Kahului Baptist, and have decided it is most prudent and loving to neighbor to cancel our event. In light of COVID-19 and the CDC and governing authorities advising gatherings of over 10 to be cancelled, we want to do well and heed the recommendations of those authorities. Our aim is always to align ourselves to God’s word that he might receive all glory, honor, and praise in these decisions.
I want to offer a deep, sincere thank you to the churches, teams, and hundreds of individuals who have contributed to already make our efforts a financial success. You each have sacrificed your time, talents, and money to raise team sponsorships that will bring financial aid to many across our community receiving biblical counseling. I cannot say thank you enough and I am overwhelmed with the support and love we have received from each of you.
We would also like to offer a refund for your event ticket should you wish to receive one. Please email paula@bccmaui.com or call or text (808)873-6455 to get your refund processed. Once we calculate everything that has been collected for team sponsorships, we will be granting prizes to your team members based on the amount collected. These prizes have been provided by the following generous community donors:

Maui Coffee Attic - John and Gwen Henry
Warren & Annabelle’s Magic
Tin Roof Maui
Aloha Mixed Plate
Bounty Music
Maui Golf and Sports Park - Stephanie Weisel
Da Shrimp Hale
808 on Main
Ace Hardware
Honu Seafood and Pizza from Mark and Judy Ellman
Drums of the Pacific Luau
Ultimate Air Trampoline Park

Grace and peace,
Paula Higuchi

Another form of abuse falls under the category of emotional abuse. This is far more common, and almost always precedes and accompanies physical violence. The impact of this type of abuse is often longer lasting than other forms.

Emotional abuse would include name-calling, belittling(it’s a simple task how could you get it so wrong?), ridiculing (what kind of parent, wife, Christian are you?), blaming (you make me so angry...), deriding, minimizing abusive behavior (you’re just too sensitive), manipulation tactics or mind games, or threatening to mar your reputation somehow. This is a broad and varied category. Often it involves actions that wouldn’t be detected in public by others unfamiliar with the presence of a problem and is very painful.

If you or someone you know is in an abusive relationship, please contact the Maui Police Department. Also, for counseling or other questions contact the Biblical Counseling Center Of Maui .com or our church office.

I’ll cover other forms of abuse in the next post.

There are many forms of domestic violence. The most obvious is physical violence OR physical intimidation (the threat of violence).

Physical violence includes any kind of strike (punch, slap), pushing/shoving, grabbing, spitting, pulling hair, or any other direct physical interaction designed to control.

Physical intimidation includes any looks or actions designed to instill fear in the victim. This includes yelling, slamming things, throwing items, punching things, physical blocking (so as to prevent escape or free travel), hurting pets, threatening children, showing weapons, or other indirect actions.

In the next post we will look at other subtle forms of abuse or violence that often precede or accompany physical abuse.

If you or someone you know is being abused, please contact the Maui Police Department. If you need assistance or have questions please contact the Biblical Counseling Center Of Maui @ bccmaui.com or our church office and we’d be glad to help begin to navigate these issues.

Amidst the hustle and bustle of fall activities, let us not forget this massive problem in our nation, community, and churches. It is often not mentioned and regularly mishandled. In the coming days we’ll post some common areas of abuse in relationships and where you can go for help.

Imagine with me for a moment that for the past few months you have been struggling with sleep. It seems to be inconsistent, sometimes you just want to sleep all the time. Other times you seem to barely get any sleep. Additionally, you feel like you lack the motivation to do anything. You don’t hav...

“Mental Illness” is on the rise according to various reports. It is so common that our culture now tends to speak in terms of “mental health.” This isn’t necessarily a bad thing. However, we must ask the question, what is the root of the problem? And does psychiatry and psychology accurate...
