May is Skin Cancer & Melanoma Awareness Month ☀️

Living in Hawai‘i means year-round sun exposure — and in Kona, UV levels remain high even on cloudy days. Over time, cumulative UV damage increases the risk of premature aging, precancerous lesions, and skin cancer, including melanoma.

One of the most important things patients should know:
Skin cancer is often highly treatable when detected early.

Protecting your skin goes beyond beach days. Daily prevention matters:
✔ Broad-spectrum sunscreen
✔ Hats & sun-protective clothing
✔ Seeking shade during peak UV hours
✔ Yearly professional skin checks

Watch for warning signs like:
• changing moles
• spots that won’t heal
• lesions that bleed, itch, or continue evolving

Persistent facial redness is one of the most commonly overlooked signs of Rosacea.

Because rosacea can resemble acne or skin sensitivity, many patients spend years treating the wrong condition.

Without treatment, redness often becomes:
• more noticeable
• more frequent
• more difficult to control

Early diagnosis can make a significant difference.

If your skin has become increasingly red or reactive, call our office to schedule an appointment and discuss treatment options.

Persistent facial redness is often assumed to be sensitive skin, but it may be a sign of Rosacea.

Rosacea is a common inflammatory condition that can progress over time without appropriate treatment. Early diagnosis and a medically guided approach can help reduce symptoms and prevent long-term skin changes.

If you’re experiencing ongoing redness, visible blood vessels, or increased skin sensitivity, evaluation is recommended.

When was your last skin exam? 🩺

In Hawaii, we enjoy sunshine year-round — but that means our skin gets more UV exposure than most places. Even when the weather starts to cool, UV levels stay high in Kona, increasing the risk of sun damage and skin cancer over time.

An annual skin check helps identify early signs of sun damage, precancerous spots, and other skin changes before they become more serious.

At Island Dermatology, our board-certified providers perform thorough, professional skin exams and create personalized care plans to help you protect your skin in Hawaii’s tropical climate.

✔️ Comprehensive full-body skin exams
✔️ Early detection of skin cancers and precancerous spots
✔️ Personalized prevention and treatment plans
✔️ Most health insurance accepted

It’s never too late in the year to put your skin health first. Read more about the importance of prevention and early detection on our blog: https://islanddermatologyllc.com/blog-1/f/annual-skin-checks-why-they-matter-more-than-you-think
