The Breath is the Bridge.

Even in long-term recovery, hard moments still come. But the breath is always there—a bridge between body and mind. Slow it down, and the mind follows.

Rewiring ourselves to take deep, diaphragmatic breaths takes practice, but it’s worth it. Learning to breathe deeply brings relaxation, peace, and clarity. In early recovery, Yoga Nidra helped me regulate my nervous system. Today, you can explore the work of Andrew Huberman and NSDR (Non-Sleep Deep Rest) to tap into powerful tools for healing.

Relaxation isn’t a luxury; it’s a necessity. Brain science shows that rumination, resentment, and replaying past events flood our system with stress chemicals, hardening neuropathways that reinforce negativity. When that spiral starts, picking up the phone and reaching out is one of the best habits to build. You don’t have to push through alone.

At Honu House Hawaii, we are lucky to have two incredible individuals leading the way in recovery and transformation.

🌀 John Burke is the founder and co-owner of Honu House Hawaii. After struggling with chronic relapses, John discovered that true recovery begins with humility and surrender. With over a decade in recovery, he’s dedicated his life to helping others find freedom from addiction, building a foundation for lasting change through 12-step programs and a deep understanding of what it means to truly heal.

🌿 Nick Terry is an author, life coach, and breathwork practitioner who co-founded Honu House. Sober since 2014, Nick believes in the transformative power of breathwork and cold water immersion to regulate the nervous system and support recovery. With nine years of experience in addiction and mental health treatment, he’s passionate about helping individuals uncover the root causes of their challenges and achieve sustainable well-being.

Together, John and Nick bring a unique, holistic approach to recovery, combining powerful tools like breathwork, cold therapy, and deep personal growth. Their mission at Honu House is to create a safe, supportive space for individuals to rediscover themselves, heal, and thrive.

We’ve been doing it since 2016- with the same unwavering care and attention for all clients needing support.honuhouse provided a safe and structured environment for my son to make the transition back to a healthy way of living. “I am the Mother of a recovering addict; I have no words to describe my gratitude to the Honu House Hawaii And its team. My son struggled with drug addictions for over ten years.
When I first called The Honu House, I spoke with John Burke; I explained the situation about my son, and he was kind, understanding, and knowledgeable of my son’s needs. John checked up with my son days before my son got admitted into their program; John made sure my son was ok and safe. The level of care and commitment this team provides are above many other programs I have known. The communication was top-notch, I reside in a different state John and his team made it possible they answer all of my questions and concerns.

The multidisciplinary team goes above and beyond. The team includes and involves the family in the recovery process. The goals and expectations of the patients are attainable.

I am very pleased with the program. The program is based on group sessions, patient-specific therapy sessions, and the holistic approach which I believe is essential in improving health. Everyone is compassionate about their work starting with John, the therapists, the social workers the Psychiatrist, and the driver.
Honu house provided structure, and a safe atmosphere, they made my son feel warmly cared for and comfortable he felt at home.
The program set a healthy foundation that he can continue as he transitions into a healthy sober life.
