The safest way to ring in the new year is to celebrate at home with people who live with you or virtually with friends and family. If you've been invited to celebrate with others, be sure to have an open conversation with the host to see what safety measures they're taking. Here are 7 questions you can ask to determine the level of risk of an upcoming gathering:

1) Will the event be held indoors or outdoors?
2) How many people will be at the event?
3) Will seating arrangements outside be at least 6 feet apart?
4) Will guests bring their own food and drinks or will individual utensils and bentos be served?
5) Will people be willing to wear face masks and physically distance?
6) Will people be willing/able to practice proper hand hygiene?
7) Will the event be brief or prolonged?

For New Year's Eve, consider an early outdoor dinner and celebration then send everyone home to ring in the new year separately. Or start the party virtually, then gather a small group outdoors closer to midnight for a brief, in-person countdown to 2021. Let's celebrate safely and keep Hawai‘i healthy as we kiss 2020 goodbye!
