Safe, legal abortions were available in Canada when I trained to be an obstetrician/gynecologist, but some of my professors remembered a time when women were dying of uncontrollable infections or hemorrhage following desperate attempts to end an unwanted pregnancy.
Contraception was either illegal or difficult to access. Even if further pregnancies endangered a woman’s life, she was not allowed to undergo any sterilization procedure without her husband’s consent.
We will not go back!
