We've had several readers write to us, confused about the difference between the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Appalachian range, and also confused where the Appalachian Mountains begin and end.
Many people associate ""Appalachians"" with the Appalachian Trail, which stretches 2,190+ miles from Springer Mountain in North GA to Mount Katahdin in Maine.
But as you'll see in the map below, the range itself extends even further south into Alabama, and even further north into Maritime Canada.
Overall the Appalachian Mountains encompass 737,000 square miles of land in 13 US States and Canada, and they're estimated to be 480 million years old!
