Ayurveda teaches us that when we feel hunger and have a good appetite, this is a sign of strong, healthy digestion. Healthy digestion is needed for feeling our best and for having the energy to show up for what is present in our life at this moment. Healthy digestion is the root of disease prevention according to Ayurveda.
Some tips for promoting healthy digestion as we transition into Autumn:
*Drink warm beverages, never cold or iced.
*Eat whole, unprocessed foods that are cooked, served warm and generously spiced as much as possible.
*Eat only when you are hungry.
*Keep overeating to a minimum. 1/2 of stomach filled with food, 1/4 of stomach filled with warm beverage (this would be approx 4-6 oz.), 1/4 of stomach empty for proper movement during digestion. Make a bowl by putting your cupped hands together and that is a meal portion.

Summer= Fresh Fruits!
Ayurveda teaches us that due to fruit digesting differently and more rapidly, it is best to eat it alone and separate from other foods, unless the fruit is cooked as part of a meal. This is to support strong and complete digestion of foods eaten.

I have been enjoying the fresh local fruits such as sweet cherries, peaches, blueberries and grapes. The sweeter the better to help cool the summer heat!,πŸ‰πŸ’πŸ‡πŸ‘

Do you feel unsatisfied after eating? You could be missing 1 or more of the 6 tastes that Ayurveda teaches us, that makes up a balanced meal and leaves us feeling content. This Saturday morning, I will be teaching the 6 tastes and providing a sample meal that is perfect for the summer season, full of a rainbow of colors and flavors. Would love to have you there! Summer is pitta season. Pitta helps us digest and absorb our food, gives us motivation to do and be productive (which is helpful for these long summer days).
However, it is pitta's tendancy to accumulate during summer. Too much pitta can cause acidity, fiery temper, decreased patience, anger, nausea, diarrhea, skin issues, etc.

Food and beverage examples that increase heat/pitta:
Alcohol
Coffee
Red meat
Salty foods like chips, salted nuts, etc.
Spicy foods
Fried foods
Processed foods

Food examples that cool/decrease pitta:
Sweet, fresh fruit
Most vegetables, especially greens
Oats, quinoa, white rice
Beans and lentils
Fresh herbs like cilantro, mint, parsley, dill
