POV: I’m Rebecca and I’m just over here in Kalamazoo navigating the collapse of our economy as an independent, brick and mortar art supply shop owner. Can I interest you in some exceptionally vibrant, handmade watercolors?

I considered going home today and I’m so glad I didn’t. Someone just came up from South Bend with a whole list of things she saw on my IG page and she was so excited to see them and experience the shop in person. And she showed me her handmade journals 💕

For the record, you never have to ask if it’s ok to show me your artwork. The answer is always an emphatic yes! I love sharing my shop with you and I love when you share your artwork with me.

Thanks for making Kalamazoo Dry Goods a destination 🫶🏻

Power is restored at the shop and someone just bought all these tubes of paint on my website, so I’m feeling cautiously optimistic about the day.

I decided not to increase prices on Golden and Daniel Smith during the last round of price increases and I’ve been actively working to actually reduce prices for you. I know things are tight for many of us and I remain committed to creating affordable access to supplies to the very best of my ability.

This is such a difficult thing for little shop like this one - trying to create enough volume to be able to operate on thinner margins, when higher volume also creates a demand for more labor - more ordering, more receiving, more shipping. I’m not sure yet if it’s sustainable - that really depends on whether lowering prices results in higher volume or volume remains flat with reduced revenue.

But I’m going to try it out. For now, you can enjoy lower prices on Golden heavy body and fluid acrylics and Daniel Smith 15 ml watercolors at Kalamazoo Dry Goods. Some of the prices are live on the website and more will be updated soon.

Thank you for your support, for choosing to shop small and independent, and for helping to build this lovely little shop with me.

I hope to see your beautiful faces soon.

A “warehouse visit” is pretty exciting when you work in the art materials industry 😍 What a wonderful week it has been, connecting with industry professionals and doing deep dives into some of my favorite brands! It’s going to be a great year with the anticipated launch of several new products and collections I know you all will love. My lips are sealed for now but believe me when I say I cannot wait to tell you more!

Thanks for keeping the shop bustling in my absence. Mattie is there until 6 today and I’ll be back to help you find creative treasures 10-7 tomorrow.

And I’m exited to synthesize all this information so I can share it with you!

The shop is open until 6 today. Mattie is there and would love to help you find just the right tools for your next creative project.

Hello everyone. It’s the weekend! 🙌🏻

First I want to thank you all for sharing my social media posts. My 30yo child who lives in Louisville told me today that their lifelong friend who lives in Lexington was sent one of my posts by someone she went to art school with. We can easily feel disconnected and isolated but in reality we’re all usually just a few degrees of separation away from one another, and that just redefines community for me.

Second, I’m excited to be heading to North Carolina next week for a meeting with folks from Caran d’Ache and Sennelier (swoon) so said 30yo will be here to keep the shop open in my absence. This is so good for me because I’ve been a bit stressed as of late and a few days away will refresh me. It also means there will be no fabric cutting next week until I return.

The shop is open tomorrow (Saturday) 10-5 and I hope to see many of your faces then.

Look who stopped by Kalamazoo Dry Goods today! It’s Scott Stevenson, Brand Ambassador and Educator Extraordinaire for Daniel Smith! We had a fantastic chat about what makes Daniel Smith - both the company and their watercolors - so incredible and he left a bunch of his signature dot cards in my possession to share with you. I’ll announce a promotion to give these away as soon as I stop being so starstruck by this art industry rockstar.

We also stopped by Crow’s Nest for a long lunch - thank you for a tasty meal and taking good care of us.

The shop will be open 10-6 tomorrow and I look forward to seeing some of your lovely faces then.

Good morning! Thanks so much for all the love on that last reel ♥️ I’m going to try to read and respond to all the comments today 🙂

The shop is open 10-6 today and I have a special visitor coming. I’d love for you all to show some Kalamazoo love and stop in today!

I’ll post the big reveal later but here’s a hint: I never really do sales but all in-stock Daniel Smith products are 20% off today through Saturday.

I’ve been busy for as long as I can remember. My eldest child will be 30 this week so probably at least that long. But the last few years have been relentless. Building a business takes all of me. So things just get pushed aside.

It used to be silly things like not having time to iron the dinner napkins. What a luxury! Now I can’t remember the last time I saw a doctor - it had to be before Covid. Not great self care.

But I’m trying so hard to put systems and staff in place this year that allow me to do the important things again. And maybe some frivolous things, too.

Today I took care of a little-yet-big item that’s been nagging at me since 2020. When I bought this building in the first summer of COVID nothing was really functioning and the deed was never recorded with the city. I figured they’d find it in a pile somewhere eventually but that didn’t happen. So today I got a copy from the county and registered it with the city so I’m the official owner of record of my building. I bought it on land contract in 2017, then paid off the land contract with a loan in 2020, then paid off the loan in 2025. And now all the paperwork is recorded and I’m legit and official and I worry a little less that something could happen to rob my children of all my hard work if I suddenly die.

So a little, not very time consuming thing to be honest, but a big self and family care step that needed to prioritized.

And I got my nails done, too.

I hope you’re doing good things for you today.

I’ll be back in the shop with Kat tomorrow. We hope to see you.

I’m sorry. I was trying to be chill and only make one post today even though I have so many new supplies to show you…but I can’t not show you the new Al-Star colors. Come on, Lamy. Stop. I don’t need another fountain pen 😅
