It’s slow today but I don’t care because 1) I’m catching up on some things and 2) I got a new bag. My family always makes fun of me because I carry so many bags to work so I bought myself a weekender to fit everything I carry on a daily basis into a single bag and it’s even bigger and more beautifully made than I imagined. Look at the pockets inside 😍 I LOVE IT.

Anyway, it’s way too expensive for me to sell at regular price in the shop and I had to buy 2 to get one for myself so the other one is available at a deep discount to one of you who appreciates a great bag and doesn’t mind bag-twinning with me.

Good morning, everyone :) It’s September and that means it’s time to stock up on craft kits! Many of you know and love these Felted Sky kits and they’re back in stock for the cooler seasons, but also check out these new punch needle, crochet, and embroidery kits by Craft Habit. Sooo cute!

The shop is officially open until 6 today but I’ll probably be around until 7 or 8 so feel free to come by late if that works better for you.

I look forward to seeing your lovely faces.

One of those things that makes me feel like I have the best job in the world is you bringing in your art to show me what you’re creating. That happened twice this morning so it’s a good day :)

The first couple of pics feature work by and shes’s both an exceptional human and an exceptional artist so you should probably give her a follow and watch for her popping up at markets around town.

The last few pics are a great example of leveling up those Emily Lex watercolor workbooks. They’re great books for beginners but allow for more experienced artists to add their own touches like flowers and berries and borders - so much fun! Thanks so much to Susan for sharing with us!

I’m here until 6 today and I look forward to seeing more of you and more of what you’re creating.

Hello everyone. Thanks for all the love this week, both on social media and in the shop. I’ve been waiting for this order since April (!!!) and it’s finally here 🙌🏻 This is open stock Gansai Tambi watercolor paints by Kuretake and there are sweet little boxes that you can use to make your own palette. There are so many luscious colors I’m not sure how you’ll choose, but I can’t wait to see what you put together.

I’ll be heading home soon but this should all be ready by tomorrow afternoon. I’ll be here 10-5 and then closed Sunday and Monday. I hope to see you!

Hello everyone 🙂 Tonight I want to give big thanks to Cat Crotchett and Heidi Weiss from for allowing me to put together their drawing and painting class kits.

It may seem small, but this is a big thing for Kalamazoo Dry Goods! When we first discussed this almost 2 years ago there was just no way I could even afford to buy 20 each of a dozen or more supplies to make a class kit, much less source some of the specific supplies that were required. And, like colleges and universities and K-12 institutions across the country, they got used to buying from B**** and that’s a hard habit to break.

But I’ve worked to build this shop’s capacity and they both believe in supporting independent, local businesses instead of big box and online retailers that just suck up our money and leave our communities without vibrant, valuable spaces like art stores.

Today I was finally able to make those class kits for their students and I’m so very thankful for the opportunity. Every dollar spent here is a win and I’m proud to be keeping some dollars off the balance sheet of a big corporation this fall.

This week I’m closing the shop at 4:30 on Wednesday and Thursday so I can head over to WMU and welcome all their students back with lovely, locally sourced supplies from Kalamazoo Dry Goods.

Thanks so much, Cat and Heidi and everyone else who has shown so much support to this little shop.

🔥🔥🔥Wow! I got a visit from today ahead of the rally at WMU tonight. She founded and uses urban sketching techniques to create protest art at rallies, protests, and events.

She uses a variety of sketchbooks and materials to create sketches on site and picked up a set of Inktense paint pans by Derwent to use tonight. If you see her be sure to say hello or give her a follow on Instagram to see more inspiring sketches. And if you’re interested in urban sketching, I hear a chapter just started in Kalamazoo! Lots of great supplies to get you started can be found at Kalamazoo Dry Goods.

Hello out there. I wasn’t gone for long, but it was long enough to walk into this space and see its beauty and abundance with fresh eyes. It’s honestly so crazy to me that it even exists. I walked into a dozen shops while I was gone and even the cutest little shops in the most upscale beach towns don’t compare to this.

I was getting really discouraged before I left, hearing people tell me they’ve been following online for 2 years and just finally made it in even though they live here in Kalamazoo, or that they “forgot this place exists” even though they’re a local artist. Comments like these really make me question what I’m even doing. But so many more of you tell me how you love and value this space like I do, and today I’m remembering all that encouraging feedback and seeing it through eyes of wonder and gratitude. Thank you for helping this place exist and for all your support and patience as I navigate its growth.

The shop is open until 6 today. I look forward to seeing you.

This is your reminder that supplies aren’t precious, life is. When I heard myself tell my husband “I’m working myself to death” I knew I needed to make some changes and realign my life with my priorities. So I’m out here in Oregon using the good supplies without any intention of making good art, eating strawberries and wearing linen pants like a coastal grandmother, breathing in the ocean air and taking my own advice.

I’ll be back in a couple of days - hopefully feeling refreshed and realigned - and the shop is open in my absence. I have no doubt Michelle will take good care of you while I’m gone.

See you soon.

What a lovely little late-day delivery. These beautiful, handmade papers just arrived from Bat Flower Press in New York. They’re made from ethically-sourced materials like sawdust and even recycled matboard from MoMA.

These make beautiful gifts for creatives as is or provide a foundation on which you can make your own designs.

I’m heading home for the day but will be here 10-5:30 tomorrow. I hope to see some of your faces then.

Them: where is your loading dock? We have a pallet for you but no lift gate.

Me: I don’t have a loading dock or employees to unload your truck but I have a couple of teenagers less than a mile away 😅😭

Big thanks to my teenagers for swiftly biking to the shop to unload all these back to school supplies 🙌🏻

This is what a small family business looks like. Much thanks to everyone who is helping it grow.

I’ll be here doing all the indie art shop things until 6 today. I hope to see you!
