Robert J. Bonhomme

Robert J. Bonhomme, Sr., 92, of Portage, passed away peacefully Saturday, February 21, 2026 at Brookdale Senior Living in Portage. He was born July 2, 1933 in Vincennes, Indiana, the son of Stephen and Ethel (Marsh) Bonhomme. Bob left school early to help provide for his family and then enlisted in the U.S. Army, honorably serving his country in the Korean War until 1955. On November 3, 1956 in Hastings, he was united in marriage to the former Norma Bernard, who preceded him in death March 18, 2013. Bob worked in the paper industry as a press man, retiring from James River in 1994. He was a member of St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church in Portage and enjoyed puzzles and woodworking. In 2018, Bob was able to visit Washington D.C. with many of his comrades through Talons Out Honor Flight, which was truly one of the highlights of his life. Having left school before graduating, Bob regretted never attending his high school prom or never having earned his diploma. In 2024, he was able to attend his “senior” prom and, at the age of 90, was awarded his high school diploma. This remarkable achievement was broadcast throughout the country and the world, even having an article written about him in Time Magazine.

Bob is survived by his four children, Jean (Bill) Wiborn, Joseph (Diane) Bonhomme, Robert (Julie) Bonhomme, Jr., and Mary (Rob) Romig; eight grandchildren, Jesse (Debbie) Bonhomme, Jamie (Kory) Bonhomme-Conyer, Nicole (Chris) Walker, Dani (Tim) Keith, Ashlynn Bonhomme, Joe (Liz Torres Martinez) Romig, Matt (Lexi Lower) Romig, and Taylor (Austyn Mason) Bonhomme; 12 great grandchildren; and special friend, Jan Dolbee. In addition to his parents and wife, Norma, he was preceded in death by two brothers, James and Walter Bonhomme.

Family and friends are invited to gather from 2-4 and 6-8 PM Sunday, March 15, 2026 at Adams-Redmond Funeral Home, 4100 S. Westnedge Ave., Kalamazoo. A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11 AM Monday, March 16, 2026 at St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church, 1150 W. Centre Ave., Portage. He will be laid to rest with Norma at Fort Custer National Cemetery. For those wishing to make a contribution in his memory, the family suggests Talons Out Honor Flight.

Theodore "Ted" Mak

Theodore “Ted” Mak, age 95, of Portage, passed away peacefully at home on January 31, 2026, surrounded by the people who loved him most. Ted was born January 23, 1931, in Kalamazoo, to Valentine and Gladys (Walentowska) Mak. He graduated from Kalamazoo Central High School in 1949, and from an early age was known for his intelligence, curiosity, and quiet determination.

As a young man, Ted was drafted into the U.S. Army and served honorably in the early 1950s. He completed basic training at Camp Breckinridge in Kentucky, and spent two years stationed in Fairbanks, Alaska. While Ted didn’t often talk about his time in the service, it was clear it shaped him-teaching him discipline, resilience, and a deep sense of responsibility that stayed with him throughout his life.

After returning home, Ted continued his education, attending Western Michigan University and later the University of Michigan, where he earned a degree in electrical engineering. He went on to build a long and fulfilling career in engineering and technical work, eventually becoming a licensed professional engineer. Ted took pride in his work, but even more pride in providing for his family.

In 1960, Ted married the love of his life, Mary (Kowalik) Mak. They shared 65 wonderful years of marriage-years filled with love, partnership, laughter and unwavering support for one another. Together, they built a home that was steady, welcoming, and full of care.

Ted found the greatest joy in life’s simple pleasures. He loved tending to his garden, patiently caring for every plant. He enjoyed collecting stamps and learning the stories behind them. Most of all, he cherished time with his grandchildren-watching them grow, listening to their stories, and just being there. And if there was ice cream around, Ted was always in. To his family, Ted was steady, kind, thoughtful, and endlessly loving. He showed his care through his actions, his presence, and the life he built for those he loved. He will be deeply missed, forever remembered, and always held close in our hearts.

Ted is survived by his beloved wife, Mary; his children, Ted (Debbi Quigley) Mak, Tony (Lauri) Mak, and Diane Mak-Jordan; his grandchildren, Scott Mak, Alyson (Cole Maxa) Jordan, McKenzie (Patrick Tierney) Mak, Rachel (Cale Lyon) Jordan, and Brandon Jordan; and his treasured great granddaughter, Logan Maxa, who brought him so much happiness. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sisters and brother, his nephew, Richard Shane, and his niece, Linda Slover.

Family and friends are invited to gather from 5 – 7 PM on Wednesday, February 4, 2026 at Adams-Redmond Funeral Home, 4100 S. Westnedge Ave, Kalamazoo, where the Rosary will be recited at 6:30 PM. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12:30 PM Thursday, February 5, 2026 at St. Monica Catholic Church, 4408 S. Westnedge Ave., Kalamazoo. A luncheon will be held immediately following Mass at the funeral home. Ted will be laid to rest at Fort Custer National Cemetery, Augusta on Friday, February 6 at 10 AM. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be directed to Centrica Care Navigators, VFW Post 1527, Red Arrow Post, or for a Mass in his memory.
