September is also Kinship Awareness Month in which we celebrate the relatives or close friends who provide a safe home for children. In Michigan, there are approximately 4,800 children in foster care being raised by kin.

Kinship foster care is a growing program here at Family & Children Services and we are so grateful for the ways these families have stepped up when children needed them most. We provide resources to these families, of course, but Michigan has also made it easy for Kinship families to find and receive support with their Kinship Care Resource Center. Kalamazoo’s Annual Wellness & Recovery Festival brings people together from all over the county in celebration of Mental Health and Freedom from Addiction.

This event showcases local resources, businesses and organizations that are providing support to the recovery community and an opportunity for real people living in recovery to display their talents and artistry. In addition to the local resource booths, there will be food, fun, games, live music and so much more for the whole family.

Join us this Saturday to celebrate recovery for folks in our community and make sure you swing by the Family & Children Services table to say hi!

A common question we get asked by potential foster parents is what’s it like working with a child’s biological parents. Listen as some of our foster parents tell you about their experiences. The Breakfast Optimist Club of Kalamazoo (BOCK) recently sponsored some of our clients to shop in preparation for the new school year. BOCK’s generous donors allowed the children to purchase new clothes, a new backpack, and their school supply lists. What a gift!

We are so thankful for BOCK and their support of our mission and our clients over many years. Thank you to each and every one who donated their time and money to support our clients!

Thank you Western Michigan University’s Alpha Xi Delta women for spending a few hours this week helping clean our Foster Care Visitation rooms!

Alpha Xi Delta has been a true partner to us, volunteering at so many events and offering help with everything from stuffing envelopes to cleaning different spaces. They are brilliant, hardworking, hilarious, and so kind. We are so grateful they spend so much time making our lives easier and the lives of our clients more beautiful!

Thank you so much, ladies!

We recently held our staff picnic to celebrate and honor the hard work our staff completes every day for our community!

This year we featured a Family & Children Services Farmer’s Market, complete with F&CS “bucks” that every staff member was given to spend at local vendor stalls. It was a perfect day celebrating staff and local merchants!

We truly believe we have the most dedicated, intelligent, and compassionate team so take as many opportunities as possible to celebrate them.

Yesterday Agency leadership held our very own car wash for staff to thank them for all their hard work.

Our frontline staff put their cars through so much transporting children and families to and from meetings so we wanted to show our understanding of that by giving their cars a little love.

Thank you so much to everyone that came to get their cars washed (and didn’t judge the work!) We appreciate you!

“They were there when I needed them the most.” That is what a client in our Case Management services recently said about their Case Manager and Family & Children Services.

Though some of our clients come to us during some of their hardest seasons of life, our goal is to ensure they know that we will be with them every step of the way. We work hard to prove that we want to partner with them to find success in however they define it, and that they can count on us to help them navigate whatever challenges they experience while in our care.

Last week we hosted close to 300 clients and families for our annual Family Picnic! We had a petting zoo, therapy dogs, Kona ice, and a delicious meal. We also had free clothing, school supplies, and books.

Social connections are vital when it comes to keeping families together and offering our Family Picnic is one way we help families form those connections. Whether it’s with other foster parents who are at similar stages of the process, or other families experiencing similar situations, events like these allow for organic communities to be built.

Thank you so much to the staff, donors, volunteers, and vendors who made this event fun for everyone. And thank you to our clients for taking the time to come!
