John’s outstanding leadership, compassion, and dedication to his team and the families we serve are truly inspiring. His ability to lead with both heart and integrity makes him a role model to us all.

This recognition is so well-deserved. Congratulations, John! We’re incredibly proud to have you at the helm. 🖤

WMed represents at the International Association of Coroners and Medical Examiners (IACME) conference hosted at the Golden Nugget in Las Vegas. This week hundreds of death investigators, law enforcement and other agencies gather to exchange ideas and valuable info/practices in support of this profession…..being the voice for those who can no longer speak for themselves. This morning, MEI Jen Kibby and I had the tremendous privilege of attending the rendering of honors and the interment of two unclaimed veterans we investigated and provided postmortem care for. It was an incredibly moving ceremony and one of the largest Fort Custer has seen. There were easily 150 or more attendees from the community and from various service organizations like Daughters of the American Revolution and Patriot Riders to name a few…..additionally, the uniformed services were well represented as enlisted, NCOs and officers from various services arrived to pay their respects…..I was stunned by how the community came together to ensure that our warriors were honored and cared for in a way that reflected their sacrifices. I was humbled. -john

🇺🇸 Happy 4th of July from all of us at the Medical Examiner’s Office! 🇺🇸

Today we celebrate our nation's independence and the freedoms we hold dear. We also take a moment to express our deepest gratitude to those who have served, and continue to serve, our country.

Many of our own team members, including our Chief who proudly served over 20 years, have worn the uniform with honor. We are thankful for their dedication both in and out of service.

Wishing everyone a safe, meaningful, and patriotic holiday! 🎆

As we come together to celebrate Memorial Day weekend, we at WMED pause to remember the true meaning behind the holiday.

Our team is honored to assist in the burial of unclaimed veterans—men and women who may not have family to lay them to rest, but who will never be forgotten.

It is a privilege we hold close to our hearts.

Wishing everyone a meaningful and peaceful Memorial Day.

15 MEIs from across our thirteen counties participated in quarterly MEI refresher training at WMed last week. Quarterly training is a way to communicate changes, reinforce practices/protocols and disseminate information, ensuring we are able to achieve consistency in our investigations. Topics included Homicides, Suicides, Drownings, Overdose Deaths, Fire Deaths, Mass Casualty Events, Identifying Next of Kin and several other subjects. It’s also a way to bring people together that might not otherwise interact face to face based on county location.

Yesterday, May 3rd, 2024, WMed and the Office of the Medical Examiner joined with our community partner, St Martin of Tours Church, here in Kalamazoo to hold another successful and well supported "Claiming the Unclaimed" ceremony. We interred 50 cremains, providing dignified and recognized final arrangements for those who otherwise had no one available, willing, or able to "claim" them.

The word "unclaimed" can have a negative connotation but does not mean an individual is unloved or unwanted. It sometimes just means that either a deceased person has no one left to be witness to them or is financially able to make final arrangements. As such, it falls to the Medical Examiner to find a way to give them recognition and a voice in their end journey.

We do this through community-based partnership and generous donations, allowing us to provide a beautiful setting for their final resting place, and a brass name plaque for the interred persons, to signify each final transition. During the ceremony, each decedent's name, date of birth, and date of death are read aloud, and a small cross with their name is placed in the grave site. I'm so appreciative of the support and especially to my deputy chiefs, Dave, Kreutz, Jill Jelenek, Ashleigh Butler and the St Martin team for all the hard work that went into this event. It was a truly solemn and heartwarming event! -john

Yesterday, our office at WMed was given the privilege to participate with multiple agencies in support of a simulated drunk driving awareness event, based on a fatal accident scenario at Hopkins High School in Allegan County. The event was in advance of their prom this weekend. Participants included the Allegan County Sheriff’s Office, Allegan County 911, Hopkins Fire Dept, Wayland Area EMS, Aero-Med, our own death investigator MEI Shannon Fuller (D-ABMDI), Gordon Funeral (transport) and myriad other supporting entities. This was a realistic drunk driving scenario of a two car MVA on prom night that resulted in multiple injuries and one fatality. Student observers were able to see and hear events unfold in real time, from the initial 911 call to first responder arrival, extrication of victims, EMS transport that included ambulance and medevac helicopter and finally, the death investigation. This was a great awareness event, fully supported by community resources. FIRST CLASS! Our many thanks to all involved.
