It has been a fun week! I had the honor and pleasure to present "How to Prevent an Eating Disorder" to students at Portage Central High School and "Eating for Function, Growth, and Sport" to the Greater Kalamazoo Crocs Swim Club. Have a blessed Thanksgiving everyone!

Recently I shared with a client that our bodies are like cars, that carbs and fats are the fuel, and fruits, vegetables, and protein are the engine parts. We need a mix of all items to make our bodies function at their best. A week later she came to me with the following analogy and said I could share it with others. Interestingly, she is Amish and doesn't drive. (Yes, I made sure she understood how cars work before I gave the scenario 🙂).

Last fall, an Amish man living in Michigan contacted me asking for help. He and his wife were opening an eating disorder residential treatment facility for Amish women and girls. They have a daughter who struggles chronically with bulimia nervosa and want to help other people. I have now been working there one day per week since its opening in January. At least 7 women and girls from all over the country have gone through or are going through the program. Amish men and boys also have eating disorders. The owners treat them on an outpatient basis as there is not a current way to house males and females together at the facility.

You won't find the facility through any search engine on the Internet because in Amish culture they use no technology other than speaking on the phone - no texting, no computers, no email, no Internet, which also means no social media.

My Westernized culture often debates how much social media contributes to eating disorders. Amish people are not exposed to Westernized social media yet eating disorders still persist significantly. It gives us all something to think about.

Do you struggle with negative body image? I recommend reading the book Body Neutral by Jessi Kneeland. It could be a helpful addition to your body neutrality tool box.

I have a challenge for all of you: For the next week, refrain from making any body comments, complimentary or critical, about all other people, including yourself.

Think of ways we are more interesting. What traits do you value? Compassion? Creativity? Inclusiveness? Focus on those.

Consider how comparative messages might serve to sell something to you, distract you, or scare you into compliance.
