Nosebleeds happen when blood vessels in the nose break, and while they’re usually brief, they can be frustrating. Common triggers include colds and sinus irritants, dry air (cracking in the nasal lining) and nose scratching.

Using a humidifier or saline nasal gels, and staying hydrated, can help when dryness is the culprit. Seek prompt medical attention if nosebleeds happen often, last longer than 20 minutes, cause breathing difficulty or follow a facial injury.

Ear candling, for example, can burn skin, block the canal or even perforate the eardrum. If you’re tempted to try certain online “hacks,” check with an ENT specialist first. Safe, evidence-based options will always protect you better than risky DIY fixes.
