Aloha Colleagues & friends in Hawai'i (even those who have relocated!) please take a few minutes to testify online to support the removal of the General Excise Tax from medical care.
This measure would remove the GET from primary care, but we are urging the legislature to remove the GET from ALL MEDICAL CARE INCLUDING DENTISTS as we are beyond crisis levels in healthcare- with a severe lack of ALL providers and specialists especially on the neighbor islands. There are growing shortages of physicians nation wide, Hawai'i MUST STOP being one of the only states to tax medical care if we are to have any hope of improving access.

Healthcare colleagues: please consider testifying regarding your insight into our current state/affairs and choices you have had to make on WHERE (and HOW) to practice due to issues like taxing our professional services compounded by challenges in reimbursements.

Local friends, family, and community leaders: please testify in support and in support of amending the measure to include all medical care providers, physicians, and dentists. Please consider Including personal stories of how lack of access to care has hurt you and your family as many of you have shared on- and off-line.

The future of healthcare and OUR future depends on what we do NOW. Who we invest in NOW. What we are willing to stand up for/address NOW.



In every aspect of health, there's opportunity to reflect, to improve, to try, to DO and sometimes, yes, this will mean we will fall. But we get back up, learn and adjust, and keep going. That's the beauty of


We are so happy we got to do our trial residency rotation with Dr Pono Castanera while we kicked off our rural geriatric rotation for Nurse Practitioner student, Cristin Moore. As a group we learned a lot about patient needs, resource challenges, AND what our future providers need to come back and serve the communities they love.

They need reasonable conditions to establish themselves and test those wings. They need respect and support. And yes, they need a reasonable salary and a healthy environment to be husbands and wives, mothers and fathers, members of the community.


We believe that GOOD CARE is possible and necessary for ALL no matter where we live and we are so glad we got to spend the month growing, learning and celebrating 1 year with our awesome teams at Hapuna and Kaunakakai!!!

Fantastic stupendous and amazing news:
Kohala Coast Urgent Care LLC and Molokai Family & Urgent Care have LEARNERS!

Hawaii Rural Health Hilo Medical Center Foundation

Dr. Pono Castanera is a PGY3 Resident Physician with Tacoma Family Medicine Program with Multicare and Ms. Cristin Moore is a student in the University of Hawaii at Hilo's Doctor of Nursing Practice FNP program. Both have Molokai ties and hit the ground running seeing patients this week.






This is a big deal because providers are more likely to stay where they receive training- and well-supported exposure/opportunity to practice in these rural communities increases the likelihood that we can build a better informed, stronger workforce.
Here are some pictures of the awesome people who are helping make this happen.

Our state is struggling with healthcare and providing reasonable access to good care to many parts of our islands. And the gaps widen as we lose providers- naturally and sometimes suddenly.



We are doing something we see as necessary and it's required a lot of out of the box thinking because the challenges, at times, feel insurmountable. But- we believe that improving access for ALL is key to a healthier lāhui. To that end- we are extending our services to Moloka'i and we welcome you to join us!

WHO ENDS COVID PUBLIC HEALTH EMERGENCY

From my favorite Public Health Expert, Your Local Epidemiologist:
"The WHO Emergency Committee believes three things:

- COVID-19 is not unusual and unexpected.
- Cross-border transmission can’t (and won’t) be stopped.
- COVID-19 does not require a coordinated international response.

A PHEIC is a key legal mechanism within global health security. The hope is that it catalyzes timely action to limit the societal impacts of emerging risks. Since the PHEIC mechanism started in 2005, a PHEIC has ended five (out of seven) times. So this is a fairly new mechanism. But essentially the end of the PHEIC means:
- The end of mobilizing international coordination;
- The end of streamlining international funding;
- The end of accelerating the advancement of the development of vaccines, therapeutics and diagnostics under emergency use authorization.

The WHO now sees COVID-19 as a threat in our regular repertoire of things-trying-to-kill-us. These things will still happen but with less urgency."
