Congratulations to the ARU-Acute Rehab Unit for being recognized as a team as the August 2025 DAISY winner!
The team’s nomination read: “You never know when your last day will be on this earth. You never know when Jesus is coming. On June 12th at 4:49 am, I didn’t know that until I saw the glow of amber lights of a semi on my passenger side and thought this is it. You’re done and going to be dead. I was hit on the passenger side of our 1999 Dodge 3500, newly painted with a new windshield, by a pickup truck. Black Max did his job. He saved my life and Jesus was right there covering me. I woke up with a guardian angel metal emblem that I had on my passenger visor lying on my lap.
Jesus has more work for me to do. As a past trauma RN, I know there are several paths that could have been laid out for me. I was transported to Kankakee and now I am on the receiving end of healthcare with some truly awesome caring staff here at Riverside Medical Center in Kankakee. I thank God every day I wake up and what makes a difference in life? Your caring, peaceful family and friends. I have been a nurse for forty-six years, ten years bedside, thirty-two admin staff and four years consulting and a legal nurse. My last job at University Medical Center in Las Vegas I was on the Daisy Award committee. I want to nominate the Rehabilitation Unit for the Daisy Team Award. These are my observations. Most all CNAs are wanting to further their professional development as an RN, PT, USN Tech and build on their career. I encouraged many to reach for their goals and believe they will do it.
Some of the staff that stand out were Brad who spent an hour admitting me to the unit and talking to me. I couldn’t shower on my designated day because of a cast on my left arm. They asked for my input and I said to go to the kitchen and get saran wrap to keep it dry. Katy RN brought in saran wrap from her mom’s kitchen the next day and gave me a baby Jesus to go with my guardian angel. All staff answered call lights within five to seven minutes and helped each other cover. If my RN or CNA was in another patient’s room, staff were always asking how I was if I need anything, pain meds, ice water, bathroom. When I got up to go to the bathroom, I appreciated them cleaning me up because my right arm was in an immobilizer. I was grateful for this! This staff truly cares for the patients. They are kind and explain what needs to be done for the patient’s good. I hear them speak kindly of the patients to each other. The RNs and CNAs get you ready to go so you are on time for physical therapy without delay. On Saturday, Loretta was my CNA. I was looking forward to my shower day. My arm immobilizer had been removed, and Loretta made sure I got a shower. We got it done. It had been eleven days since I had a shower. It felt fabulous. She went above and beyond her duties. The Rehab staff made sure I was always tucked in and comfortable going to bed with an extra blanket, ice bag, or combination of Robaxin and Tramadol for sleep. I can tell Brittany is a strong leader, and her staff appreciates her by the way they speak of her in a complimentary manner. I especially want to thank Dr. Jain for her kindness, concern, and continuous update on my progress, test results, and plan of care. I am truly grateful and believe I am a miracle to have survived this accident. I am blessed to have come to RMC for my rehab and recovery. I didn’t realize Riverside was a Magnet hospital until the last couple of days. This is truly and extraordinary healthcare facility with staff that honestly cares for the patients. I could hear the joy and camaraderie of the Rehab staff in the hallways. Helping each other to get the work completed and enjoying the task as they were helping the patients. It really shows this is an extraordinary hospital."
