FMPhA Member and Georgia State Leader Jen Belew, PharmD will be presenting a case study covering Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI), Anxiety, Probable Vascular Cognitive Impairment (VCI), and Cerebral Amyloid Angiopathy (CAA); walking us through the pharmacist’s role in protecting brain health and reversing cognitive decline.

Each week, members complete one module of ASCP’s Age-Friendly Pharmacist Badge Training independently, then come together live every Saturday at 11:00 AM ET (4/4, 4/11, 4/18, 4/25) on Google Meet for group discussion, shared insights, and Q&A; all through the functional medicine lens led by Dr. Veronica Riera-Gilley, PharmD, BGCP.

The cohort will culminate with an optional in-person celebration at the ASCP South Central Regional Meeting, where members will mark completing their badges together.

National Pharmacist Day on January 12th annually recognizes and honors all pharmacists across the nation.

The role of pharmacists has shifted over the years. Where once they served as the classical “lick, stick and pour” dispensary, they now serve as an integrated member of the health care team. Pharmacists are often directly involved in patient care and play a vital role in a patient’s health.

Historically, pharmacists primarily checked and distributed drugs to doctors for patient prescribed medication. In modern times, pharmacists advise patients and health care providers on the selection, dosages, interactions, and side effects of prescriptions. Additionally, their role includes being a learned intermediary between a prescriber and a patient. By monitoring the health and progress of patients, pharmacists can then ensure the safe and effective use of medication. (from )

As the profession continues to evolve, we see Functional Medicine as the future of pharmacy. Pharmacist can begins to integrate this modality by screening for drug-nutrient depletions, drug-supplement interactions, pharmacogenomics, and deprescribing.
