How to Coordinate Breathing with Leg Lifts
Phase A: The Set-Up (The Lift)
1. Exhale first: Before your feet even leave the floor, blow out through your mouth (“pursed lips”).
2. Engage: Gently lift the levator ani (the “blueberry” cue).
3. Lift: Bring your legs up to the starting position (e.g., 90 degrees).
• Why? The lift is the hardest part for your abs; the exhale protects the pelvic floor from being pushed down.
Phase B: The Lengthening (The Lowering)
This is where you focus on the levator ani lengthening.
1. Inhale slowly: As you lower your legs back toward the floor, breathe in deeply into your belly and pelvis.
2. The “Slow Drop” Cue: Imagine the levator ani is a parachute slowly opening. It is staying active to support your organs, but it is physically getting longer as your legs descend.

• The pull offs and push off: Normally, you use your calf and foot to “push off” the ground.
