🎄 Setting Boundaries with Family This Holiday Season 🛑

The holidays can be a joyful time, but for many, family gatherings bring stress and anxiety—especially if you’re navigating difficult dynamics. Setting boundaries isn’t just healthy—it’s essential for your mental well-being.

Here are 5 Ways to Set Boundaries with family this season:

1️⃣ Be Clear and Direct:
💬 Example: “I’m not comfortable discussing my relationships. Let’s focus on catching up about work or hobbies instead.”

2️⃣ Limit Your Time:
🕒 If gatherings feel overwhelming, plan an “exit strategy.” Let them know you’ll only be able to stay for a few hours.

3️⃣ Prepare Responses for Tough Topics:
✋ Have go-to phrases ready, like:
“I don’t want to get into politics right now.”
“Let’s agree to disagree and enjoy the day.”

4️⃣ Create a Self-Care Plan:
🛀 Build in time for yourself before and after family events. Recharge with activities that ground you.

5️⃣ Say No Without Guilt:
❌ Skipping a gathering? That’s okay! Politely decline with:
“I won’t be able to make it this year, but I hope you all have a wonderful time.”

✨ Remember: Setting boundaries doesn’t make you a bad family member—it makes you someone who values your own mental health.

💬 Need extra support navigating family dynamics this season? The Liz Davis Therapy Group is here for you. Let’s talk. Both Harry Green, Graduate Student Therapist ($50 per session), and Lynee Gonzales, M.S., PLMFT ($125 per session), are currently accepting new clients! Are you an adult child of immigrant parent(s)? Then this Group may be for you! I'm Liz, and as a second-generation American, I am a child of a Kenyan immigrant mother. I also work with many other second-generation Americans of all cultures, ethnicities, and countries of origin in my private therapy practice. The creation of this Children of Immigrants Support Group was inspired by all of my amazing clients and the work we have done together over the years to navigate straddling two (or more) cultures, navigating family dynamics, doing identity integration work, and discussing how to navigate the culture, values, and expectations of our families of origin, while still honoring our identities as Americans and all that entails. If this resonates with you, consider clicking the link below to join our Group hosted on Sunday, January 12th, from 3pm-4pm at our office!

Thanksgiving and Christmas are times of reflection, gratitude, and togetherness. Yet, for many, the holiday season also brings a mix of emotions, especially for those in the LGBTQIA+ community. The post-election climate has left many feeling uncertain or anxious about how conversations around the table might unfold. If this resonates with you, I want you to know you’re not alone—and there are ways to foster meaningful connections, even when perspectives differ.

As a therapist, I work with clients navigating these very dynamics. Here’s what I want you to remember as you head into this season:

Anchor Yourself in What Matters Most: Whether it’s your chosen family, personal values, or simple gratitude for the present moment, centering yourself can help you stay grounded. Your worth and identity are not up for debate—they are constants, deserving of respect and care.

Use Empathy as a Bridge: Family conversations don’t have to focus on disagreements. Consider asking open-ended questions about shared memories or mutual interests. For example, “What’s a tradition you loved as a child?” can shift the focus to common ground.

Set Boundaries Where Needed: Boundaries are an act of self-love. It’s okay to redirect a conversation or step away for a moment if things become overwhelming. Phrases like, “I’d rather focus on the things we share today,” can gently guide discussions back to positive territory.

Celebrate Your Strength: If you’re walking into a space that feels complicated, recognize the courage it takes to show up. Whether you’re seeking connection or simply keeping peace, your presence is powerful.

Find Moments of Joy: Holidays are about more than just the table. Create your own moments of celebration—whether it’s a morning walk, texting a supportive friend, or cuddling up with a favorite movie after dinner.

This holiday season, I invite you to lean into your inner strength and the resilience that has carried you through so much already. Connection isn’t always easy, but it is possible when we lead with compassion—for others and for ourselves.

Wishing you a season of peace, however you celebrate.

Over the past few weeks, I’ve been hanging curtains, arranging art, decorating, and scrubbing every corner of the office to make it feel just right. Every detail—down to the pillows on the couch and the lighting in the room—has been chosen with care and intention.

Why? Because I believe the space we share matters.

Therapy isn’t just about the conversations we have; it’s also about how safe, comfortable, and supported you feel while you’re here. The environment we create together can shape how deeply you connect with yourself and the work we’re doing.

When you walk into my office, I want you to feel seen and held in a space that reflects the care and attention you deserve. It’s more than just a room—it’s a haven for healing, growth, and self-discovery.

I can’t wait to welcome you in. 💛

Moving into a new space can cause a lot of stress. The logistics, cost, time spent, and more are capable of weighing on even the most organized person. And that weight has the potential to make you feel sad, angry, hopeful, and triumphant - all in a short amount of time.

During the last month, the team has spent SO MUCH time making the space feel like home for ourselves and our community of clients. When you arrive, we want our waiting room to feel like an invitation of hospitality. We want you to curl up among our blankets, hug our pillows, and warm up next to our (artificial) fire. Relax and feel grounded. When it’s time for your session, we want you to do the same in each of our 3 curated offices.

Get cozy. It’s time for therapy.

In the coming weeks, we’ll share more about the new office with you as it comes together!

It must be working!

We’ve noticed an uptick in the amount of water bottles we need to replenish in our waiting room after putting up this fabulous artwork from Maison Cactus Art Gallery by Barcelona-based artist @‌whoiscorin on IG.

It's really intimidating telling healthcare providers about your cannabis use. It shouldn't be. Especially when it comes to mental health.

You want to get the best quality of care. Stigma causes far too many people not to get the care they deserve.

I believe I have a different perspective on cannabis use and its place within an individual's mental health care. Everyone is different, but no one is helped by being judged.

There aren't a lot of Hispanic therapists in Kansas City. That's a big part of why I wanted to become a therapist.

There's comfort in someone who looks like you sitting across from you in the therapist's chair. Someone who understands your experience on a deeper level. If I can be that comfort for someone, that makes my work even more meaningful.

Mental health isn't something that is normally recognized in Hispanic families, and I believe that needs to change.

Do you know someone who deserves to prioritize their mental health with a therapist who understands their cultural experience and background? Tell them about me!

Hey, Lynee here! Just in case you didn’t know, I recently joined the team at The Liz Davis Therapy Group!

Being a therapist is SO REWARDING. Helping people learn about themselves, helping couples deepen their connection, and helping families resolve conflicts is hard but important work.

If you know someone, be it an individual, couple, or family, who would benefit from seeing a kind, nonjudgmental therapist, please send them this post! They can schedule with me directly at https://liz-davis.clientsecure.me/

Thank you to everyone who has helped me grow into the therapist I am today, especially all of the clients who have allowed me to walk with them on their mental health journey!

To everyone chasing a goal that feels out of reach: I see you, and I want to encourage you.

I’ve dreamt of becoming a therapist since I was 14. The journey wasn’t easy—undergrad took me seven years due to mental health challenges, and I didn’t start grad school until I was 29. But at 31, I graduated and opened Liz Davis Therapy in 2021.

Fast-forward three years: I’m thrilled to announce we’ve expanded into The Liz Davis Therapy Group! This Fall, we moved into our own dedicated office space. Seeing our logo on the wall feels surreal. I’m beyond grateful for my incredible team—Harry Green, the most talented Graduate Student Therapist, and Lynee Gonzales, an amazing PLMFT. Together, we’re building something truly special.

If you’re working toward a dream, remember: there’s no such thing as a “perfect” timeline. It took me two decades, countless client sessions, moments of burnout, and endless support from loved ones to get here. Every step mattered, big or small.

Celebrate your milestones, no matter how tiny they feel, and don’t give up. You’re closer than you think.

To everyone who’s supported me and this practice—thank you. Your encouragement has made this possible, and I’m sending that same support back to you.

Human beings are wired to pick up on the subtlest of social cues. But we are also wired to live in small communities where we know everyone intimately.

Living in larger cities and using social media enables us to expand our social circles more than at any other time in human history. Throw in unlimited access to global news, and all of this can be overwhelming for our human brains, which have not evolved to catch up with modern society.

In a large group of strangers or acquaintances, do you feel uncomfortable or awkward? Are you afraid to speak or ruminate over what you just said, thinking it may have come across as weird?

Please know that this is absolutely normal. It happens to me, too!

We must be gentle and compassionate with ourselves before, during, and after these types of social situations, interactions, and settings. We’re all just human and doing the best we can.

Everyone wants to fit in. Even the loudest person in the room has insecurities.

I know because I work with clients like that all the time, and we discuss how they sometimes compensate for their insecurities through jokes or entertaining a crowd to make themselves feel wanted.

It’s also okay to be quieter until you feel more comfortable in that setting.

There’s no right way to be. Just be YOU.

Social anxiety is so normal. It’s not pathological, and there’s nothing wrong with you. If you ever want to discuss this more or figure out how social anxiety manifests in your life and how to cope wiith it, feel free to schedule an appointment with a clinician at Liz Davis Therapy.

Social anxiety can take many forms. You may feel like you’re weird or that something is wrong with how you act around other people. Maybe the things you’ve said recently didn’t quite land as intended, resulting in rough conversations or misinterpretations.

How do we address this?

First, feel your feelings and honor them. After you’ve been gentle with yourself, try to see the situation objectively and in context.

Maybe they’re just not your people, and that’s why they didn’t get your jokes. Not all of us are meant to be everyone’s cup of tea. Maybe you have certain things to learn or need to have some real, intentional conversations with yourself.

And that’s ok.

But you also don’t know everything that’s going on inside their heads.

You don’t know if their expressions are because they are tired, hungry, or thinking about something stressful. Whatever it is, it likely isn’t about you.

Be kind to yourself and be intentional about living as your Authentic Self. Soon, you’ll find yourself giving grace to others instead of keeping it from yourself. Remember that you are enough!

Election season is almost over!

No matter which side you're on, you're probably ready for it all to end. The anxiety elections bring can be debilitating. Remember to be kind to yourself during the next few days.

If you're the kind of person who habitually checks the news, make time to walk in nature. Spend time with people who love and support you. Practice gratitude by doing a short meditation focusing on the positive aspects of your life.

And, no matter what the result is tomorrow, remember to be kind to each other.

Have you ever felt like you're walking through a fog so thick, you can't see the sunshine that you know is there? That's often what depression feels like—a heavy blanket of clouds that doesn't seem to lift, making even the simplest tasks feel overwhelming.

Depression is more than just a bad day or a fleeting mood. It's a deep, persistent feeling that colors everything in shades of gray. It whispers lies into your ears, telling you that you're alone and that things won't get better. But here's a truth louder and more powerful: You are not alone, and there is hope.

Therapy can be like a lighthouse in the midst of this storm. It offers a safe space to explore these feelings, to understand their roots, and to start navigating towards clearer skies. It's not about just "cheering up" or "looking on the bright side." It's about healing, understanding, and gradually finding your way back to yourself.

In therapy, we work together to unravel the threads of your experience, to find strategies that resonate with you, and to rebuild the connection to your inner strength and joy. It's a journey of rediscovery, of learning to dance in the rain while we wait for the sun to emerge.

If you're feeling weighed down by depression, please know that it's okay to ask for help. It's a brave and beautiful step towards your well-being. I'm here to walk with you, to listen, and to support you as you find your path back to a life filled with color and hope.

Ready to take that step? Click the link below to learn more about working with me. Let's bring some light into the shadows together. You deserve to feel the warmth of the sun again.
