Doulas are such wonderfully educated, emotional and physical supporters both during and after labor... but how do you pick the right doula? How do you know who will be a good fit for you?
I've gathered some frequently asked questions I have received over my year of being a certified doula and would love to provide you with some of these answers!
What do birth doulas do?
I offer a welcome meeting upon reaching out as well as an in depth prenatal meeting between 34-36 weeks to help work through the important details surrounding your birth. I'll also provide you with unlimited talk/text/email communication so that you always have a way to reach me. I attend your birth whenever you're ready for me to come; in whatever form that looks like for you - mental, emotional, or physical support; whatever you {and your partner/support person{s}} need most in that moment. After you've delivered, I also provide postpartum follow ups!
Who hires a doula?
I love the diversity of clients I have the opportunity to support! Most of the time, clients either hire a doula because they know what they want for their birth - but they don't know how to communicate their wishes to their care team, or they hire a doula because they don't know what to expect or how to navigate through such a transitional time. Either way, your doula is here to make sure your wishes and values are found, heard, and followed!
Do I need a doula?
Not necessarily! You are not required to have a doula by any means - but if you are struggling with anxiety, lack of support, an education gap due to your providers not explaining the process in a way you understand, etc. it may not be a bad idea to hire a doula to help fill those spaces!
Can I have a doula at the hospital?
Absolutely! Some hospitals in Kansas still limit the amount of visitors you have in your room, so just make sure they know your wishes ahead of time, but there shouldn't be any issues!
Will a doula support an epidural? What about a cesarean?
Yes and yes! I am here to support you through your birthing process - no matter what that looks like for you.
