Sometimes our kids — or even ourselves — don't have the words to explain what's going on inside, and it can show up as behaviors that can feel confusing, frustrating, or overwhelming. This visual is a powerful reminder that behavior is communication and that what we're seeing on the outside — meltdowns, withdrawal, anger, or even silence — is often rooted in deeper feelings like fear, disconnection, shame, or overwhelm.
When we can pause and get curious instead of reactive, we begin to ask: What might they be feeling underneath this? What do they need right now? Just as importantly, we can offer that same compassion to ourselves. Parenting through hard moments isn't easy, especially when we're in the trenches.
This tool can be a great way to build emotional awareness, start conversations with your child, and help put words to big feelings as they arise. Find out more about this awesome tool and many other great, free materials at The Social Worker's Toolbox, linked in the comments below!
