π It's Autism Acceptance Month!
Let's challenge some misconceptions about autism:
𧩠"My child has friends, so they are not autistic."
- Friendship doesn't exclude autism. Autistic individuals can form deep and meaningful connections, just like anyone else. Autism is a spectrum, and social interactions vary greatly among individuals.
β€οΈ "My child has empathy so they aren't autistic."
- Empathy isn't limited to neurotypical individuals. Many autistic people are deeply empathetic, although they may express it differently. Understanding emotions might be challenging, but it doesn't diminish their capacity for empathy.
π« "My child is very social so they can't be autistic."
- Being social doesn't negate autism. While some autistic individuals may struggle with social cues, others are outgoing and enjoy socializing. Autism is about more than just social skills; it's a complex spectrum with diverse traits and strengths.
Let's expand our understanding of autism and embrace neurodiversity! At Reflect to Connect Psychology, we are constantly striving to improve our own neurodiversity awareness and work from a neurodiversity-affirming framework. Families interested in getting their child assessed for autism can find more information on my website. Together, let's create a more inclusive and accepting world.
