We started this journey with a simple idea - to deepen our commitment to supporting the small businesses within our community. In addition to supporting through education and resources, we wanted to find a way to infuse small businesses with direct financial assistance.

With UMB Bank’s help (a HUGE continued thanks), we were able to turn this "find a way" into the Alchemy Sandbox Program. This process involved an online application, a two-minute video, a "How-To" Pitch Workshop, and a 7-Minute Pitch to a panel of esteemed judges.

We say all that with the full understanding that this process of selecting only 5 businesses was not at all a "walk-in-the-park," and we're grateful to our judges for putting in the hard work. Now that this process of Q1 is complete (*drum rolls*), we are excited to announce the first 5 small businesses to receive this funding:

Cervical Cancer: A Global Health Crisis
Every 2 minutes, a woman dies of cervical cancer, yet it is nearly 100% preventable. While late stage cervical cancer produces alarming symptoms, including those seen below, usually they don't start until it is too late. Please encourage the women in your life to talk with their health care provider about cervical cancer screenings.

Are you up to date on your cervical cancer screenings? It's recommended that women ages 21-29 have a Pap test every 3 years; and women ages 30-65 have a Pap test every 3 years OR both a Pap & HPV test every 5 years. Share these guidelines with loved ones to encourage them to schedule their next appointment!

Did you know Pap tests are fortune tellers? Cervical tumors are slow growing, and a Pap smear can detect changes in your cervical cells that suggest cancer may grow in the future!!! This means you can go on the offense, and create a plan of care with your healthcare provider for treating cervical cancer should it arise in the future. As uncomfortable as they may be, Pap tests are invaluable in our fight against cervical cancer. Schedule your pap test!

"An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure"
This adage rings true in most situations, but definitely as it pertains to health and wellness. The HPV vaccine, recently released and targeted towards males and females ages 9-45 is almost 100 percent effective against 9 of the most common high risk HPV strains. These 9 strains of HPV are the most common causes of cervical cancer. If you're in this age group, help us eradicate cervical cancer and get your immunization ASAP!

January is the month we celebrate Cervical Cancer Awareness Month. Although the disease can be deadly, early detection, diagnosis and treatment allow for better outcomes. Encourage the women in your life to have age appropriate cervical cancer screenings!
