The heroic background of Alyssas Law

You may recall at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, on February 14, 2018. seventeen people lost their lives, and an untold number of others were injured (mentally and physically for life) when an assailant opened fire.

Lori Alhadeff, who lost her 14-year-old daughter Alyssa that day, created a movement now called “Alyssa’s Law”—named after Alyssa Alhadeff—is a law that requires public schools, including charter schools, to have active yet, silent panic alert systems in schools. That system directly connects to first responders and law enforcement agencies so they are instantaneously alerted of emergencies to get to the school as quickly as possible, mitigate the threat, and assist in the recovery process.

So far the bill has passed in

New Jersey and Florida

It is pending in New York and Nebraska

Part of the finding and support for Alyssa's law came from a bill passed in 2019, I believe HR 4066. There are grants available as well.

Alyssa’s Law is critical legislation addressing the issue of law enforcement response time when a life-threatening emergency occurs because time equals life. The law calls for the installation of silent panic alarms that are directly linked to law enforcement, so in case of any emergency they will...

Last year at this time, I was talking to a group of super-intelligent and inquisitive students about school safety. One of them pulled me to the side and asked how she should deal with bullying? My answer today would change a great deal from what it was a year ago.

1). As hard as it is, don't take it personally as much as it is directed at you. It really is not about you.

2). Stop telling yourself the story over and over; as challenging as it is, don't let it get inside of you or become pervasive.

3). This to will pass. Up till this point, how many hard days have you had? 1,10, 100, your record is perfect vs. your bad days. Don't let this event become a part of your permanent record.

Bullying has been around a long time, and there is still work to do with all the progress we have made. My bullying story finally ended at a class reunion when I asked my best friend where said bully was. After asking if I still thought about him and what he did years ago, he asked me if I was successful in my career. I said yes. He asked if I was happy in my relationship? I said yes. I'll never forget what he taught me. Raynard, he took your pride for a few minutes, and you have given him your time for years. What is worse?

The debate in Texas over campus conceal and carry heats up. The next chapter K -12 AND Private Schools.

vs.

Six years after Texas passed a controversial measure allowing licensed gun owners to carry concealed handguns on college campuses, one Republican state lawmaker is pushing to expand the law by allowing licensed adults to carry weapons in public and charter schools.

The statistical information in this article is alarming and insightful. About 900MM guns worldwide, 750MM gun-related deaths, and 95% male ownership. I love my constitutional rights, my family, and my neighbor yet as we hear and see these tragedies we have to look at the other side of liberty and ask what is our responsibilities. If the math holds true will we have double the guns and deaths in ten years? If so, that is not the legacy I want to be a part of leaving for the next generation. Please share your thoughts.

Anyone hoping for gun reform should take note of how the aftermath of the UK's worst shooting played out.

As schools discuss returning to onsite live teaching, how will they address school safety? A strong forethought? Or a regrettable afterthought? Our hope is the former!

Leakage is one key to predicting and preventing school shootings and improving school safety. There are great partners and programs that will help monitor social media with keyword searches to flag threats of this kind.

The article discussed 400 kids being absent from school, I wish it shared how many kids informed the school, their parents, or the police. So many lessons we can learn that will improve school safety.

A 13-year-old girl was arrested Tuesday after Instagram posts threatening to shoot up her middle school in Lake Placid.

An Interesting excerpt from this article. There is light shinning from the other side:).

Governor Spencer Cox is expected to sign a bill into law that lifts the statewide mask mandate on April 10. Plus, the CDC announced that vaccinated people can gather, unmasked -- and even gather with those who are in the low-risk group, such as children.

Could schools return to somewhat of a pre-pandemic normal before the end of the school year?

03/10/2021

We are proud to share that Missouri is among the states with the highest proportion of in-person learning, according to the American Enterprise Institute (AEI)! Thanks to the teachers, school leaders, students and families who have adapted to new circumstances created by the pandemic and worked hard to continue to provide and engage in high-quality learning opportunities.

At this current time, approximately 95% of public schools are offering some form of in-person learning. See the latest data on patterns of instruction being offered statewide here on our COVID-19 webpage (dashboard near the top): https://dese.mo.gov/communications/coronavirus-covid-19-information.
