Join us in celebrating four first-time platelet donors, Kaitlyn, Jarrod, Sydney, and Bryant!

They all came out over the weekend to support their sister, who is currently battling an illness. Their donations are a beautiful example of how family and community come together when it matters most. Thank you all for being lifesavers. ❤️

This International Women’s Day, we’re proud to recognize the incredible impact women have on the lifesaving mission of blood donation.

Did you know that nearly 55% of blood donors in the United States are female? Every day, women across our communities roll up their sleeves to help ensure hospitals have the blood they need for patients facing surgery, cancer treatments, trauma, and more.

Whether they’re donating themselves, encouraging friends and family to give, or volunteering at blood drives, women play a vital role in keeping the blood supply strong.

To all the women who give their time, compassion, and blood to help others, thank you for being lifesavers. ❤️

💖 Happy Women’s Month! 💖

Today we’re celebrating women who make a real difference in our community—like donor Claire R. from Olathe! A dedicated member of the Olathe School Board, Claire advocates for children’s education and inspires others to give back, whether it’s for MLK Day, Random Acts of Kindness Week, or our local blood drives.

Claire has been a regular donor since February 2024, giving in honor of her late sister and to help meet critical blood needs in Kansas City. Her dedication reminds us that giving is a blind act of kindness that can save lives we may never meet.

Because of women like Claire, lives are saved in our community. ❤️

Mickey knows firsthand how powerful blood donations can be. After suffering second- and third-degree burns to 73% of his body in April 2021, Mickey relied on 35 units of blood throughout his months-long recovery.

“We’re very grateful for the heroes — people who donate blood," Mickey's wife MaryAnn shared. "Without blood, he wouldn’t be here.”

Thank you to every donor who steps up and continues to make lifesaving care possible. 🩸❤️

In honor of Black History Month, Community Blood Center presented the annual Dr. Charles Drew Lifesaver Award to sickle cell advocate Sheena Anderson. Named for Dr. Charles Richard Drew, the father of modern blood banking, the award recognizes leaders who strengthen the blood supply and champion the need for racially diverse donors.

Sheena’s advocacy began after her 12-year-old son, Bam Saladin, was diagnosed with sickle cell disease, a disorder that disproportionately affects individuals of African descent. Patients often require ongoing transfusions, and closely matched blood from racially similar donors can significantly improve outcomes.

The award was presented during Children's Mercy employee blood drive. Though Sheena was unable to attend, Dr. Shabnam I. Arsiwala accepted on her behalf, joined by the care team supporting Bam and other sickle cell patients.

Motivated by her son’s journey, Sheena continues to raise awareness and inspire blood donation within Black and Brown communities — helping ensure patients like Bam have access to lifesaving blood.

“Sheena has turned her family’s experience into action,” said Chelsea Tibbetts, Vice President of Blood Operations at Community Blood Center. “Her advocacy reminds us that blood donation isn’t just generous — it’s a lifeline.”
