Before you invest your time, money, or energy, make sure your idea solves a real problem for a specific person.
In this video, Dr. Brandy Archie breaks down 7 simple steps to qualify your business idea before you launch:

1. Define the problem clearly
2. Know exactly who you’re helping
3. Validate the demand
4. Check your competition
5. Evaluate feasibility
6. Plan for sustainability
7. Align it with your lifestyle + values

The goal isn’t to launch fast — it’s to launch strong.

From Clinician to OTpreneur: Real Examples of What’s Possible

If you’ve ever wondered how to move from treating patients to building something of your own—this is your sign.

OT entrepreneurship isn’t a dream for “someday.” It’s happening right now:

💡 Esther Bay – Created Modified Independent to design accessible self-care products.

🚐 Krista Covell-Pearson – Built a mobile OT practice that brought services to the community.

🏠 Jackie Glary – Launched First Coast Aging in Place Solutions using a hybrid model that blends private pay + insurance billing.

Each of these OTs started small, solved real problems, and built sustainable, impactful businesses around their unique expertise.

Here’s the takeaway:
👉 You don’t need a clinic or investors to start.
👉 You just need to identify a problem, sketch a solution, validate it—and start testing it.

Your OT skills are entrepreneurial skills: adaptation, empathy, and creative problem-solving.

If you’re ready to learn from other OT founders, grab templates, and connect with peers doing it now—join the community at OTConnected.com.

Let’s build the next era of occupational therapy—together. 💪

We laugh, but we’ve all been there—running between patients, juggling documentation, answering call lights, and realizing… we can’t sustain this pace forever.

That’s burnout, and it’s not just you. A 2024 AOTA workforce report showed that over 74% of OTs feel emotionally exhausted at least once a week. (Source: aota.org)

Here’s the truth 👇
You don’t have to choose between your love for OT and your sanity.
You can build flexibility, freedom, and impact by thinking beyond the clinic—through consulting, education, content creation, or community programs.

That’s exactly what we’re doing inside OTConnected—a space built for OTs who want to take their skills further, find new income paths, and build sustainable careers without burning out.

✨ Whether you’re still in the trenches or ready to launch your own thing—OTConnected has something for you.

When people think of school-based occupational therapy, they often think only about IEPs. But here’s the truth—our role goes far beyond paperwork and therapy minutes.

The overlooked but critical ways OTs support students and schools every day:

Sensory Environments – Designing calming corners, fidgets, and classroom adaptations that help every child regulate and focus.

Handwriting Readiness – Supporting posture, fine motor skills, and visual-motor integration so literacy starts strong.

Transitions – Helping students prepare for major shifts, from elementary to middle school or high school to post-secondary life.

Mental Health Initiatives – Collaborating with staff to reduce stress, teach coping strategies, and promote wellbeing in education.

The takeaway: OTs in schools shape environments, prepare students for life skills, and support mental health. Our scope is far bigger than IEPs—and the more we share it, the better others will understand the power of occupational therapy in education.

Sometimes the simplest tools make the biggest difference. The reacher (aka grabber) may be “old school,” but it’s still one of the first devices I teach because it:
- Reduces bending & fall risk after surgery
- Supports independence in dressing & ADLs
- Adapts to multiple use cases (rotating heads, short vs. long reachers)

It’s an easy win for patient safety and empowerment—plus a great conversation starter for OT entrepreneurship.

WFOT recently Updated the Definition of Occupational Therapy — Here’s Why It Matters

In July 2025, the World Federation of Occupational Therapists (WFOT) approved a new, streamlined definition of OT. And in September, it’s time for all of us in the profession to take notice.

“Occupational therapy promotes health and wellbeing by supporting participation in meaningful occupations that people want, need, or are expected to do.” – WFOT, 2025

What changed and why it’s important:

Education – OT programs will continue preparing students to focus not just on physical or functional skills, but also on participation, wellbeing, and meaningful engagement.

Policy & Reimbursement – With outcomes centered on participation and meaningful occupations, documentation and coverage may begin to shift toward what truly drives health outcomes.

Marketing OT – This new definition gives us clear language to use with clients, funders, and communities. Highlighting participation, wellbeing, and meaning can help solve OT’s 100-year marketing challenge.

The takeaway: This isn’t just semantics. The updated definition sets a global standard and a shared language. It’s a guide for how we teach, advocate, and deliver occupational therapy in practice.

Are you overlooking the most important factor in your caseload outcomes?

What if I told you that better sleep could improve every single outcome you track? As occupational therapists, we know participation depends on energy—and energy depends on rest. Yet too often, sleep gets left out of our evaluations and plans of care.

Here is how OTs can integrate sleep science into practice:

For clients with insomnia: Build bedtime routines & address environmental triggers.

For shift workers: Use light exposure & occupational balance to realign circadian rhythms.

For older adults: Adapt routines, improve positioning, and manage pain for restorative rest.

Here’s the truth: Sleep isn’t “extra”—it’s the foundation. When clients sleep better, they perform better in every other occupation.
