WFOT recently Updated the Definition of Occupational Therapy â Hereâs Why It Matters
In July 2025, the World Federation of Occupational Therapists (WFOT) approved a new, streamlined definition of OT. And in September, itâs time for all of us in the profession to take notice.
âOccupational therapy promotes health and wellbeing by supporting participation in meaningful occupations that people want, need, or are expected to do.â â WFOT, 2025
What changed and why itâs important:
Education â OT programs will continue preparing students to focus not just on physical or functional skills, but also on participation, wellbeing, and meaningful engagement.
Policy & Reimbursement â With outcomes centered on participation and meaningful occupations, documentation and coverage may begin to shift toward what truly drives health outcomes.
Marketing OT â This new definition gives us clear language to use with clients, funders, and communities. Highlighting participation, wellbeing, and meaning can help solve OTâs 100-year marketing challenge.
The takeaway: This isnât just semantics. The updated definition sets a global standard and a shared language. Itâs a guide for how we teach, advocate, and deliver occupational therapy in practice.
