Remember to MOVE! Stretching and moving about keeps the body healthy when the brain is focused in on the work. The body grows to shape itself depending on how we use it every day. Stiffness in the hamstrings, calves, and low back after sitting for extended periods is usually a sign that our body has adapted to that positioning and needs more movement.

Regardless of how much water is recommended or who you listen to, the underlying theme is still the same... Drink water!...

Regardless of how much water is recommended or who you listen to, the underlying theme is still the same... Drink water! Drinking more water helps our body to have all the fluid it needs for healthy bones, muscles, ligaments, tendons, discs, and blood. It also provides a way for us to rid our bodies of toxins and nasty byproducts of metabolism. Helpful hint: Drink more of your water in between meals instead of a bolus at mealtime so your stomach acids are not diluted too much. Also high carb and heavy starch meals will probably need more water to wash down the food.

"Text Neck", also known as loss or reversal of the normal cervical curve has been a growing problem over the past 20+ years. This posture related problem generally appears in someone with rounded shoulders and a slouchy look, often accompanied by a hoodie and phone in hand. The muscles of the upper back are strained while trying to hold up the head against gravity as well as pulling on the back of the head and often contributing to tension-type headaches. Over time, this change can become harder and harder to reverse, especially when degenerative changes present as we age. Posture is the responsibility of the individual, but we can help make those shifts easier and more comfortable as someone adapts to a better positioning.

There's more to this than simply lifting technique. Considering also that fatigue can take away the body's ability to maintain proper form is essential. Knowing to point "nose and toes" toward the object and to especially avoid rotation and flexion while lifting helps to avoid damaging the intervertebral discs. Working from home has become much more common in recent times so it has become increasingly more important to be sure that the home workstation has been set up properly. Pay close attention if you are extra sore, tired, or have repeating pain in some areas following a longer or more stressful work day. Changing and optimizing the workstation may be an easy way to give more life and energy to the off-work times and make the working hours more productive too!

The new Lancet series pulls together data from over a hundred long-term studies, and the patterns it highlights are hard to ignore. Ultra processed foods disrupt the biological networks that keep us healthy.

The Series shows how UPFs have become dominant in diets across the globe, driven by powerful corporations and political strategies that prioritize profit over health. And it makes an important point, one I deeply agree with: education alone isn’t enough. We need coordinated policies that improve access to real, minimally processed foods and strengthen local food systems.
