George Nathan Lounds, the first child of Stanley Robert Lounds and Ethel Carter Lounds was born August 18th, 1939 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. He graduated from Douglass High School in 1957 and attended Oklahoma University. In 1961, he enlisted in the U.S. Army for 3 years, achieving the rank of sergeant along with multiple letters of commendation and appreciation in the areas of marksman, sharpshooter and as a K-9 instructor. George was honorably discharged in 1964.
The love story for George and Gloria Ann Hudson started at Inman Page Elementary School. In the 6th grade, George had a paper delivery route for the Daily Oklahoman which included the Hudson family residence. Gloria lovingly shared, “He was my paperboy”. In 1963, George married his queen, Gloria Ann, on December 21st, in Oklahoma City. They were blessed with two beautiful children, Elizabeth Camille and Damon Nathan.
The happy couple moved to Kansas City in 1964 where George served four years with the Kansas City Police K-9 Unit. In 1969, George launched the first African American owned and operated State Farm Insurance Agency west of the Mississippi. He shared that being first required a high level of perseverance and personal sacrifice as he worked to establish his business and grew it successfully over 50 years. His many accumulated clients were treated as family. In many cases his relationships with clients were multi-generational, from grandparents to parents to children. George was disciplined and a man of integrity. He ran his business according to the company’s mission statement, “Our mission is to help people manage the risks of everyday life, recover from the unexpected, and realize their dreams. One employee said, “He was a caring and reliable leader, and he was always there for you.” Over the years, George was recognized as a leader in his field achieving many awards and business highlights. George had several philanthropic interests: the American Red Cross, the City Union Missions, and the Operation Breakthrough and was an anonymous donor to several other organizations. He also served as a board member of Christian Psychological Services.
George loved the Lord and was a faithful member of the Presbyterian Church, first at Saint Paul and later at Colonial Presbyterian Church. At Colonial, he served as a Deacon and Elder. George’s best friend shared a loving letter written back in 2000 of how they prayed for each other referencing the following scriptures:
“Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and produces wonderful results.” James 5:16
“Pray in the Spirit at all times and on every occasion. Stay alert and be persistent in your prayers for all believers.” Ephesians 6:18
George was a man of God and prayer was a cornerstone in his life. His personal Bible was tattered and worn as he religiously read and daily meditated daily.
He was a devoted husband to his wife, Gloria Ann, for 59 wonderful years. Together, they enjoyed a rich and full life at their homes in Parade Park, Linden Hill, and Loch Lloyd. His extracurricular activities over the years, included Chiefs football (long-time season ticket holder), golfing, and entertaining. They were blessed to travel with friends and family to destinations that often included golfing, a personal passion of his.
His family remembers him for his bright and beautiful smile, warm hugs, and regal presence. He was wise and deeply thoughtful on the impact he made on others.
George was preceded in death by his parents, Stanley and Ethel Lounds and brother, Alford Lounds. His legacy and memories are cherished by his loving wife, Gloria Ann, daughter Elizabeth and her husband David Gray, son Damon Lounds, grandson Joshua Lounds, and step grandchildren Dane & Dorian Gray; his siblings, Dorcas and husband Bobby Borders, Gertrude Lounds, Stanley LaReese and wife Annette Lounds, sister-in-law, Lula Lounds and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
