A day in the life of a hyperbaric oxygen therapy patient:

1.) Check-in for your treatment at the front desk.

2.) When called back to the unit, we recommend stopping by the bathroom.

3.) Check into the unit with the HBO nurse/tech in the room.

4.) Head to your dressing room to change into our scrubs/gown.

5.) When changed, get situated on your cot.

6.) Vitals will be taken by the HBO nurse/tech.

7.) Treatment will be started once you’re cleared by the provider.

8.) Treatment will last 1 hour 50 minutes or 2 hours.

**We have a TV attached to the chamber with a few cable channels. There is also a DVD player attached if you want to bring in your own movies, TV shows, or music. We do not have a DVD library in our center.

9.) Vitals will be taken by the HBO nurse/tech when treatment is complete.

10.) When cleared by the provider, head to your dressing room to get back into your own clothes.

11.) When changed, you’re free to leave the clinic.

Basic Information Needed for 1st Appointment:

1.) Referral from primary provider, urgent care, ED, hospital stay, etc.

2.) Up-to-Date insurance information

--> Will need to bring all insurance cards and photo ID to first appointment

3.) Wound Location, how long wound has been present, wound cause (if known), wound treatment, etc.

4.) Up-to-Date medication list

5.) Up-to-Date allergy list

6.) Medical history, surgical history, and family history

7.) Any recent lab work or imaging results (x-ray, MRI, ultrasound, etc.)

8.) If HBO is indicated for a radiation injury, we need radiation notes

**When scheduling your first appointment with our office, be sure to ask any questions you may have about what’s needed for that first visit and we’ll be happy to work with you on getting/finding that information.

We are closed today as we remember those who have lost their lives while serving our country. We are thankful for the freedom we have to work and assist with the wound care and hyperbaric needs of our patients. This wouldn't be possible without the sacrifices our military and their families have had to make over the years. Thank you to all who have served or continue to serve to protect our freedoms. Insurance coverage is mostly standardized but can vary depending on what company and plan you have. We only perform treatments that follow Medicare guidelines. There are only 14 diagnoses that Medicare will cover for hyperbaric oxygen therapy. If you have Medicare with a secondary insurance, your out-of-pocket expenses should be low. If you have Medicare without a secondary insurance, you will owe the 20% that Medicare doesn’t cover. Commercial plans such as Humana, Blue Cross/Blue Shield, Aetna, etc will depend on what coverage your plan holds for this therapy. There’s no way of knowing for sure what will be covered by insurance and what your out-of-pocket expenses will be until we get all of your information together and speak with your specific company. Before starting HBO therapy on any patient, we verify insurance coverage and discuss that with you.

Unfortunately, there are times when skin grafts or flaps start to fail. It becomes discolored, and the capillary refill of the tissue decreases. The main cause is a lack of or decreased blood flow to the tissue. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy can assist in improving blood flow which can save the tissue. Not every case is salvageable, but HBO does work well for most of these cases. Time is of the essence in these cases. The sooner HBO can be started, the better the outcome. This is considered and “emergent” diagnosis and we must work quickly to get everything moving. It’s best to start with 2 treatments per day for the first 2 days and then decrease to once daily. Typically, a patient with this diagnosis will undergo 10-30 treatments depending on how healing goes. This diagnosis is more difficult to get approved by insurance. Osteomyelitis is a bone infection. However, it needs to be documented in imaging studies such as x-ray, MRI, etc. that the bone infection is chronic (has been present for a long time) and not acute (newly diagnosed). There also has to be documentation of 6 weeks or more of antibiotic therapy as well as surgical intervention to assist with removal of the infection. Typically, a patient with this diagnosis will undergo 30-40 treatments depending on how healing goes. Osteoradionecrosis occurs when a bone infection is found in radiated tissue. This is most commonly noted in the mandible or jaw. This is treated in 2 sessions revolving around having teeth pulled: 20-30 treatments prior to tooth extraction(s) and 10 treatments post tooth extraction(s). Soft tissue radio necrosis is a broader diagnosis. Some patients who receive radiation can wind up with a non-healing wound to the skin or a wound on the inside of the body such as Radiation Cystitis or Radiation Proctitis. Typically, a patient with this diagnosis will undergo 30-40 treatments depending on how healing goes. If you have a wound in an area of tissue that has been radiated or have been told by a medical provider that you have radiation cystitis or proctitis, call our office and we can get you in for an HBO consult to discuss further.

Diabetic Wound(s) of the Lower Extremity: Diabetic wounds are described in Wagner grades. For hyperbaric oxygen therapy, we can treat those classified as Wagner Grade 3 (deep tissue infection) or Wagner Grades 4 & 5 (gangrene). For insurance coverage, you would need proof of your Wagner Grade classification and specific documentation. Typically, a patient with this diagnosis will undergo 30-40 treatments depending on how healing goes.
