How is breathing connected to mental health?
The nervous system is like the body’s communication network. It’s a complex system that helps different parts of the body talk to each other. Imagine it as a giant wiring system with electrical signals.
There are two main parts:
Central Nervous System (CNS): This is the main control center, like the brain and spinal cord. Think of it as the boss that makes decisions and sends out orders.
Peripheral Nervous System (PNS): This is like the network of messengers. It has nerves that carry messages back and forth between the body and the CNS. These messages help you move, feel, and do everything your body does.
Overall, the nervous system helps you react to things around you, move your muscles, feel sensations, and basically, it’s the master system that keeps your body working together.
Breathing influences our nervous system by:
- Activating the parasympathetic nervous system (rest and digest) through slow, deep breaths.
- Reducing the stress response by signaling safety to the brain.
- Increasing heart rate variability for a more adaptive nervous system.
- Improving oxygenation, crucial for optimal nervous system function.
- Focusing on the breath promotes mindfulness, calming the mind and reducing stress.
