6-7 year olds and up:
This age group usually has developed fine motor skills so they can take on more detailed work, like using measuring spoons and forming evenly-sized patties. They may still need reminders to watch their fingers during grating and peeling.

They also excel at: Dicing and mincing vegetables, grating cheese; peeling raw potatoes, ginger, mangoes, and other fruits and vegetables; slicing and scooping out avocados, greasing pans, using a microplane zester, de-seeding tomatoes and roasted peppers, draining and slicing tofu, rinsing grains and beans, forming cookies and patties, pouring liquids into small containers, and garnishing (or “decorating”) dishes.

At this age, kids lack a real understanding of death and are generally unable to process the permanence of it. They are very present-oriented and don’t understand that death means “forever.” They may ask the same questions over and over again. Be patient, consistent and reassuring. A child who is grieving may have a series of brief but intense responses.

This is an amazing letter from a Mom to her third grader about her family’s 10 commandments around phones — drawn in part by the research she did for her recently published book, Plays Well with Others. This letter was featured on TODAY.COM.

Dearest almost third grader,

I write this letter as much for you as I do for myself, in the hopes that the power of the written word will bind me to everything I’m about to lay out. Because inevitably, you’ll soon claim that my refusal to get you a phone is impinging on your ability to make friends, keep friends, do schoolwork, teleport into a classmate’s house via avatar — lord knows where we’ll be by then. And so, our family’s 10 commandments around phones — drawn in part by the research I did for my first book, for which I consulted myriad experts about the effects of technology on parenting — explaining why you and your siblings will not be getting a phone until high school.

1) Boredom is good.

This is something that experts repeated to me, time and time again. The best thing for developing brains is not constant input, but rather boredom, which allows the mind to wander, and inevitably create activity by itself. Smartphones are boredom killers, full stop. Instead? Pick up a book. Build a block tower with your younger siblings. Think.

A study looking at group fitness showed that physical, mental, and emotional quality of life improves when participants exercise together. It could also lead to a significant improvement in mood and well-being.

So, instead of working out solo, grab a friend, or your whole family. Here are some fun group fitness ideas:

💡Take a fitness class together like Zumba or Pilates
💡Walk or jog a Monday Mile
💡Grab some bikes and take a bike ride
💡Do some mini-exercises together
💡Sign-up for a dance class, where partners are part of the
fun!
💡Roll out your mats and take a yoga class
💡Organize a game on a court, like basketball or volleyball

Do some group fitness with your family and friends on Monday to be happy and healthy, together.

Food safety is everyone’s business. To keep you and your family healthy, remember these four steps:

1) Clean: wash your hands, utensils, and surfaces to keep bacteria at bay
2) Separate: keep raw meats, seafood, and eggs separate using different cutting boards and utensils
3) Cook: use a food thermometer to check if your meal is at a safe internal temperature before consuming
4) Chill: any leftover foods in the fridge for up to four days before tossing or freezing.

Our Practice

From our roots as the first Pediatric practice in the Platte County area back in 1989, Pediatric Care North has provided state-of-the-art medical care in a personalized environment. Our practice treats patients from newborn through high school, and on to the age of 21.

Our 9 board certified physicians have all had specialty training in the field of pediatric medicine. We now have a staff of 3 board certified pediatric nurse practitioners and 4 board certified lactation specialists. In fact, Pediatric Care North was the first pediatric practice in the Kansas City metropolitan area to create a lactation support program where mothers and babies get the nursing support needed.

Over the years, our practice has expanded and grown with the Northland. We have maintained an atmosphere of personalized service while delivering excellent medical services to all of our valued patient families.
