UMKC School of Nursing & Health Studies

UMKC School of Nursing & Health Studies The UMKC School of Nursing & Health Studies, offers students an environment rich in opportunities In 1995 we introduced a PhD curriculum. etc.

The School of Nursing and Health Studies has been an integral part of UMKC for more than 50 years. Beginning in 1972 with the institution of the Master of Science in Nursing program and followed shortly by the founding of the School of Nursing in 1974, SoNHS has a long and illustrious history. In 1981 we introduced our online RN-BSN Program, one of the first of its kind in the nation, setting a precedent for the future of education in nursing. Then in 2001 we began our Pre-Licensure BSN track, followed by the start of our Doctor of Nursing practice program in 2007, which completed the collegiate path from new student to doctorate. After establishing ourselves as a recognized and and exceptional school of nursing, we saw an even greater opportunity to offer our students, a Bachelor in Health Studies, which was introduced in 2011. With the addition of this program, we could allow our students to get a broader education of the Health Sciences world and help lead them down the path of whichever area of study the chose, whether it be the completion of the well-rounded and prepared BHS graduate, a pre-nursing track, pre-medicine. In 2013 we officially changed our name to the School of Nursing and Health Studies, to further exemplify the full breadth of knowledge and education we had to share with prospective students and the community. We have been growing and developing every year since the beginning in 1972, and are proud to count ourselves as a strong and eminent establishment within UMKC and Kansas City as whole. And we will continue striving to deliver an education that is nothing but exceptional to any student who walks through our doors (real or virtual).

Our Ph.D. students are nurse scientists who are advancing the field of nursing through their research. Doris Layon Stocker, MSN, RN, OCN, a full-time nurse and second-year Ph.D. student, is researching pain management for breast cancer survivors.

Why did you decide to pursue advanced degrees in nursing?

I found my passion in oncology clinical research nursing. I recognized that nurse-led clinical trials are important in the world of research, given the impact nurses have on patients and healthcare in general.

Why UMKC?

I wanted to immerse myself in a learning environment of nurse scientists who are nationally recognized and are experts across various research methods and health disciplines. The remote program option allows me to pursue this goal as a full-time nurse and mother of two young children.

What is your research focus?

Understanding how behavioral therapy assisted by artificial intelligence can empower breast cancer survivors by offering effective and accessible pain management options.

What interests you in this subject?

One of the best aspects of being an oncology nurse is teaching patients how to be a part of improving their lives by relieving their symptoms that are barriers to their quality of

Advice for other working nurses thinking of pursuing advanced degrees?

I wish I could sit and have coffee with every working nurse to help them figure out all the ways they can make an advanced degree happen, in whatever season of life they are in. Advanced degrees are pursued because of passion, not always necessity. Never underestimate growing and learning into a specialty, expertise or research focus that you love. There's a reason that you love it!

For the past two days, we’ve had the pleasure of hosting our incoming BSN (both Pre-Licensure & Accelerated) students for the annual Nursing Student Onboarding - AKA Success 4 Nursing! When students arrive for S4N, students are welcomed by our Administration, the Student Services Team, and members of our Alumni Association. They get introduced to the faculty who will be teaching and mentoring them for the rest of their BSN program, then get led through a mixture of presentations and get to try their “hand” at the handwashing skills lab! We round off the onboarding with panels of our local clinical partners (North Kansas City Hospital, , ) and current PLBSN & ATBSN students. We’ve got some great BSN classes on our hands and can’t wait to see the greatness they’ll achieve. Welcome ATBSN class of 2027 and PLBSN class of 2028!! 🦘💙💛

Our Ph.D. students are nurse scientists who are advancing the field of nursing through their research. Students like Gabby Stephens, BSN, RN, CPN, a clinic nurse at Children’s Mercy Hospital Kansas City, who is researching ways to help children with spinal dysraphism and spinal cord injury.

Why did you decide to pursue advanced degrees in nursing?
Helping children with spinal differences is one of my passions, and I knew I wanted to be a part of furthering research to improve care and quality of life for these children.

What interested you in the subject?
I am fortunate enough to interact with amazing families, kids and providers every day. I knew I wanted to give back, and I noticed gaps in the research that are prevalent in this patient population.

Advice for other working nurses thinking of pursuing advanced degrees?
Get out there, explore new opportunities, and just do it. There are so many opportunities in nursing, and having an advanced degree just provides you with even more opportunities. It allows you to be involved in areas you never thought possible.
