As a co-survivor, a survivor, an advocate and a women of color, I understanding the importance of early detection of breast cancer. I was diagnosed with stage three breast cancer at the age of 34. Had I waited until the required age of 40, I would not be here today to do the work we are providing through Surviving the Odds, Inc. It has been recently reported, by the CDC, that women of color are often times diagnosed at an earlier age and with a last stage breast cancer. Because of this known fact, I am asking that you to link arms with us to petition our state and federal legislation to lower the required age for mammogram screening, specifically for women of color, and for insurance companies cover the cost for those screenings. Will you support petition? Click below to sign.

Thank You!!

The CDC has finally confirmed that women of color have a higher rate of death due to breast cancer and are diagnosed with breast cancer at an earlier age the

Today is Triple Negative Breast Cancer Awareness day. One day that recognizes the most deadliest form of breast cancer. One day that brings awareness to this cancer subtype that when diagosed, a patient may potentially have an average lifespan of 5 years. ONE DAY!! One of the most striking statistics about triple negative breast cancer is that it occurs in about 10-20% of diagnosed breast cancers and is more likely to affect younger people, African Americans, Hispanics, and/or those with a BRCA1 gene mutation, grows rapidly and tends to metastasize. Since our women of color are more susceptible to triple negative then any other ethnic group, it is imperative that we have discussions about our family history, provide resources and services to our under served communities, educate our women on the importance of understanding breast cancer and breast health and continue to increase awareness of early detection. One day out of 365 is not nearly enough to raise awareness of a disease that is killing our women in great numbers. TogetHER our voices are powerful!!

If you’ve been diagnosed with breast cancer, you may learn that the breast cancer cells test negative for estrogen and progesterone receptors and HER2. Testing negative for all three is often called triple-negative. About 10-20% of breast cancers are triple-negative. Learn more about triple-negati...

As we wrap up breast cancer awareness month let's not forget that this is a disease that impacts us every single day. Whether it's support, education, or most importantly services, we should always ensure that our women and men have access to all of these resources no matter their social economic circumstances. Tonight ,SipLocalKC has partnered with Surviving the Odds to raise funds to support free services for those who are uninsured or underinsured. Please join us at the Ethnic Art Gallery for a wonderful evening of fine wine, beautiful art and networking all in an effort to support the awareness and education of breast cancer and to raise funds to provide free programs and services for those who otherwise would not get a mammogram. From the bottom of my heart, I am truly thankful for each and every one of you for all your support. Your contributions are allowing us to continue the work that we do in our underserved communities.

Yes, October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, but awareness for me is 365. DAILY I think about how this disease has changed my life forever; I think about those who have lost loved ones due to breast cancer, I think about the women and their families and how it impacts everyone touched by it, I think about my own mother, the original Boss Ross 💜💜💜 who succomed to the disease just 2 years after being diagnosed. 365 I think about how we can continue to increase the awareness of early detection especially in women of color, who are more like to be diagnosed with later stages and triple negative breast cancer. 365 I think of the resources and education that needs to be shared to provide free services for those who are uninsured and under insured. 365 I think about the statistics that show higher mortality rate in our ethnic group due to health disparities and breast cancer. 365 I thank God for this journey, this vision and this ministry because TOGETHER we are surviving the odds. It NOT just October that makes the difference, it's 365.

Today is Tuesday

I know each of you have a specific cause that you support, an issue that you are passionate enough to bring about change, an awareness that is important for you to increase; for me it's increasing the awareness of breast cancer in women of color and providing resources to those who are under and uninsured.

As the founder of Surviving the Odds, and a breast cancer survivor myself, I understand the needs and the barriers for education, and services for those who are less fortunate. Unfortunately, women of color (African American and Latin) have the highest statistics of death due to breast cancer and our mission is to decrease those mortality rates and increase early detection.

As you are doing your part to support the cause that is nearest to your heart, please consider the work we are doing to ensure EVERY woman has an opportunity to obtain her annual mammogram screening with no barriers.

Please donate to Surviving the Odds at http://www.stofoundation.org/donate.html. Your donation will give a mammogram to a woman who otherwise would not be able to receive the gift of early detection.

Thank you!

I want to send out a special thank you to Chief Steve Newman of the KCI Airport Police Department for allowing me to speak to his staff regarding the importance of breast cancer awareness and early detection. I was also honored to receive this plaque signifying the only two African-American Police Chiefs ever holding post at the KCI Airport Police Department.
