The Hearing Aid Project (HAP), a program of Sertoma International, is a national nonprofit initiative dedicated to providing free hearing aids to qualifying low-income individuals who cannot otherwise afford them. Driven by the missions of organizations like Sertoma and Hearing Charities of America, and through the generosity of so many others, hearing aids are now available to those who might otherwise go without.

A breakthrough study from Japan reveals that melanin in the inner ear can play a protective—or harmful—role depending on genetic factors. In mice lacking the SLC26A4 gene, impaired melanin clearance led to its buildup, triggering inflammation and worsening hearing loss in pigmented mice—but not in non-pigmented ones

At the Hearing Aid Project, we're encourage those impacted by hearing loss to explore new personalized strategies—like targeting melanin metabolism or immune response—to better support their hereditary hearing challenges.
