A Cochrane review determined that breastfeeding before and during vaccination injections helped to reduce pain in most babies up to the age of one year?

Results showed that breastfeeding reduced crying in babies having vaccinations. On average, breastfed babies cried for 38 seconds less than babies who were not breastfed, and pain scores were significantly lower too.

Similarly breastfeeding during blood tests in newborn babies reduces pain, and it’s likely has similar results for older babies too.

Breastfeeding is a useful tool for breastfeeding parents and babies for so many reasons, not least when it comes to unpleasant procedures; where possible breastfeeding through these can make the whole experience more bearable for both parties.

Cluster feeding is one of those parts of breastfeeding nothing can really prepare you for.

It’s when your baby seems to want to nurse nonstop for hours. When you feel like you can’t get off the couch. When you wonder if you even have enough milk to keep up. And when the thought of latching your baby on again makes you want to cry.

It’s exhausting. It’s draining. It can make you feel like you’re failing.

But here’s the thing cluster feeding is completely normal. It doesn’t mean you don’t have enough milk. It doesn’t mean your baby isn’t satisfied. It means your baby is growing, adjusting, and building your supply to meet their needs.

Those endless nights and long afternoons of back-to-back feeds are your baby’s way of telling your body what to do. And while it feels like forever when you’re in it, it won’t last forever.

So if you’re sitting there with a baby who wants to nurse every twenty minutes, know that you aren’t broken. You aren’t doing anything wrong. You’re doing exactly what your baby needs.

You’re enough. And your baby is thriving because of you.

Especially in the first months, letting your baby suckle whenever they want to is essential to establishing a good milk supply, including at night, and including in that sleepy, fluttering haze that causes the well-meaning “they’re not getting any milk” advice.

Our babies are born with no blueprint for manipulation. None whatsoever. Let them feed as much as they want to; that's how your milk production is stimulated, and it’s how your baby fully relaxes into the world.

Night feeds also protect against SIDS, Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, reducing the risk by as much as 50%.

Follow your gut and your baby, not the books, the well-meaning advice, or the clock.

While we’re here, your baby falling asleep at your breast is healthy and normal too. Waking up the second we put them down is also normal.

It’s intense for you, it can be overwhelming and it can take you out of the rhythm of everything you’ve ever known. It feels like forever whilst we’re in it. Go with it as best you can.

Re-watch every single one of your favourite series, movies and Instagram videos. 4 times. Feed wherever you are (in the UK you're protected by law to breastfeed anywhere in public), wear a sling if you can, like a snack bar.

Drink pints of water, eat whatever you like.

You've got this.
