There's nothing like the pretend play of preschoolers! Earlier this week the kiddos in our Green Sea Turtles class opened a "restaurant."

On the menu was:
🎃 A whole pumpkin
🌽 Corn
🦞 Lobster
🧁 Cupcakes
🍪 Cookies, which were actually...orange juice, because why not?

Everything was going smoothly until the chefs began enthusiastically sneezing on the food. Their teacher Ms. Anna calmly told the kids she couldn't eat at any restaurant where sneezing was part of the recipe and that she'd need to call the health department.

Perfect timing, our Director of Early Education Ms. Pam walked in, and Ms. Anna said, "Great! The health department is here!" With years of experience working with preschoolers, Ms. Pam didn't skip a beat before stepping into character, ready to "inspect" the "restaurant."

The kiddos all ran toward Ms. Pam then began sneezing on "the health department" herself! At that point, Ms. Pam announced that the health department had no choice but to shut the restaurant down, saying she would be giving them a restaurant grade of F.

The class all cheered, because apparently an F is exactly what they wanted!

So if you happen to be very hungry or very brave, this (pretend) restaurant is now open for business under the name "Birthday Party Restaurant."

One of our favorite things about having a facility dog is seeing just how deeply the kids connect with Duo Dog Coleman, even when he’s not in the room!

One of the families we serve recently shared that their children have a photo of Coleman hanging right next to their beds, right beside their own dog’s picture. They say goodnight to him every night and talk about him all the time.

And they’re not the only ones carrying Coleman close:

🐾 One little friend reached into his pocket during a speech session last week and proudly pulled out the tiniest, most crumpled little paper… a picture of his friend Coleman.

🐾 A couple of weeks ago, another friend was having a hard time separating from her caregiver, until she spotted a picture of Coleman on her therapist's badge. One glance, and her whole mood shifted. She walked off to class with a smile.

From photos on our walls and badges to pictures they tuck into pockets and backpacks, Coleman brings comfort, courage, and big feelings of safety to our kids, even when he’s not there in person.

What does progress look like in our Day Treatment program? Sometimes progress can be hard to see in the day to day but can make a difference over time.

A caregiver recently told us that they have noticed two big changes in their child since she started The Children's Place's Day Treatment program:

1.When she's upset, she is now able to stop and take a breath then ask for help.
2.She can identify emotions she's feeling and communicate about them.

These changes might look like baby steps, but they're helping young children create the building blocks they need of strong mental health for a lifetime.

Thank you to all who support this work and the big and little shifts that are changing lives.

Every day our buses traverse throughout Jackson County to transport children to our Day Treatment program. In the last year alone, our buses traveled 77,700 miles--that's enough to go around the world more than three times!

Bus transportation is one of the largest expenses in our annual budget, but one that we prioritize because we know that transportation makes mental health services possible for so many families.

Big feelings can be hard for kids to express, but one family we work with found a creative way to make them a bit easier for their little ones to understand.

Inspired by "Inside Out" and conversations with a therapist here at The Children's Place, Sarah and Jace created an "emotion control panel" that helps their 5‑year‑old boys identify and communicate what they’re feeling. From saying “Anger is pushing my buttons” to inviting Joy or Fun to “take over,” this visual tool is helping their family navigate big emotions together.

What does it look like when Duo Dog Coleman joins a speech therapy session?

Sometimes it means going through a pretend drive-through! Coleman and his pal ordered a Happy Meal, a chocolate milk, a hashbrown, two fries and one doggie treat--all for $5!

Connecting to a sensory experience can help young children regulate their emotions and ground themselves. How do we do that?

Look around the room with your child, and together name:

5 things you SEE
4 things you FEEL
3 things you HEAR
2 things you SMELL
1 thing you TASTE

This can be a fun activity to practice with kids at any time but especially in moments of emotional dysregulation. Plus, a secret is it's a great strategy for grownups to use to help ground themselves even without kids!
