Did you know...?

❀️ The American College of Cardiology recommends that any child that has tested positive for COVID stays out of sports for 14 days.
❀️ If the child develops symptoms of COVID, he/she should be asymptomatic for 14 days before returning to sports.
❀️ Kids 12+ years old and active in sports who had moderate COVID symptoms (fever for 3 or more days, bed rest) should have an ECG before returning to sports.
❀️ If the ECG is abnormal, or if there are cardiac symptoms (chest pain/shortness of breath with exertion, palpitations, fainting, new murmur), a pediatric cardiologist evaluation is recommended.

** These recommendations are in place because of the risk of COVID-associated myocarditis (inflammation of the heart muscle.)**

❀️ We have designated specific times to do the screening, so give us a call if you are in need of a COVID heart screening test.

Back to school guidance for parents, August 2020

As the area school districts are making plans for kids to return to school, many parents are faced with decisions about in-person versus virtual learning for their children. Specifically, parents want to know β€œIs my child increased risk if they become infected and develop COVID-19?”

First and foremost, we need to realize that our knowledge about COVID-19 is still growing by the week, so these recommendations may change as we gain more information and experience.

In general, infected children have less severe illness compared to adults. This is not to say that children do not become readily infected, as we now have a growing body of knowledge showing that children of all ages, from 0-18, can and do become infected with SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. But many of these infections go undetected because of mild or no symptoms. Children make up less than 10% of hospitalizations due to COVID-19, and most do not require intensive care treatment.

What about children with underlying conditions, including heart defects?

The most common health conditions associated with the need for hospitalization for children with COVID-19 are heart disease, lung disease, and weakened immune system. But we know that not all heart disease is the same, right? So who do we need to worry about the most?

For the cardiology clinic, this is a list of patient diseases that we consider to be higher risk of hospitalization (if infected) than other children:

* Single ventricle heart defects, including patients after surgical shunts, Norwood, Glenn, and Fontan operations
* Pulmonary hypertension
* Congestive heart failure requiring daily medication
* Obesity
* Compromised immune system, including DiGeorge syndrome (22q11.2 deletion syndrome), autoimmune diseases, or chronic corticosteroid use.
* Asthma or other chronic lung disease requiring daily medication

We know that physical distancing of 6 feet plus universal mask wearing dramatically decreases virus transmission between people. This will be especially important as children return to school, since many infected children are asymptomatic, but may still spread the virus to others. It is important that parents find out their school’s plans for adhering to CDC guidelines for decreasing risk of virus transmission.

There are many reasons why in-person school is beneficial to kids, including education, social interactions, regular physical activity, and psychological well-being. As our communities prioritize school for our children, we need to understand what is needed to do this in the safest possible manner. This will require limiting other social gatherings, and observing best practices to limit disease spread, including face coverings, physical distancing, and hand hygiene.

While every family will need to choose the best school option for themselves, we believe that most children will be able to return to school during this upcoming year. If you have other questions specific to your own child, please give us a call!

Welcome!

We specialize in congenital heart problems from birth to adult. We will see children for evaluation of heart problems including murmurs, a weak heart (cardiomyopathy), heart inflammation (myocarditis and Kawasaki disease), too fast or too slow heart rates (tachycardia and bradycardia), high blood pressure (hypertension), high cholesterol (lipid disorders), chest pain, palpitations, dizziness, fainting (syncope), blackouts, loss of consciousness, and a family history of heart disease to name a few.

KC Pediatric Cardiology offers cardiology consultations, cardiac sports screening, echocardiograms, electrocardiograms, Holter monitors, and Event Recorders.

We can usually see you on the day you want to be seen. We are a small medical practice, and you will find that we have a patient and family oriented, personable approach to care delivery.
