Mold testing for the home and body!

12/19/2024

Cheyenne - our nurse practitioner (NP) at the Redefining Wellness Center, sheds light on the dangers of long-term Proton Pump Inhibitor (PPI) use for misdiagnosed stomach conditions!

🚨 Often, symptoms like persistent heartburn, throat clearing, coughing, and esophageal irritation might actually signal low stomach acid rather than high, contrary to common assumptions. Long-term PPI use can exacerbate these issues, leading to increased inflammation, hormonal imbalances, and eventually more severe health problems!

💊 Cheyenne emphasizes the importance of accurately diagnosing and addressing the root causes of digestive symptoms. She is currently accepting new clients eager to explore their symptoms further. 🌟

⚖️If your hormones are out of whack, it’s likely your liver function is not so great.

Viewing the liver solely as a filter isn’t accurate. It excels at being a filter, yet it undertakes over 500 responsibilities EVERY SINGLE DAY. One of its responsibilities is designated for hormone processing and detoxification!👏

Hormones serve as vital communicators, conveying instructions to your body's cells and tissues. Thus, the state of your liver directly impacts every individual cell within your body!

The liver manages hormones by first metabolizing them upon their arrival from the bloodstream. Through its enzymatic processes, hormones are broken down into different forms or metabolites. Depending on the specific hormone, the liver then converts it into various types, altering their potency or activity. This conversion can result in different forms of the hormone, each with its own strength and function. Then, the liver attaches additional molecules to these metabolized hormones, a process known as conjugation. This step renders the hormones water-soluble, facilitating their elimination from the body.

Ultimately, the liver ensures that hormones are effectively processed, modified, and prepared for elimination, playing a HUGE role in maintaining hormonal balance within the body.

Your doctor may have even told you your liver function is fine, but it can still be operating sub-optimally, often unsuspected for years. This is ESPECIALLY true with hormonal imbalances.

Plus, simply put, when your liver is already working hard at removing toxins and toxicities (like pesticides, mold, chemicals, etc.), it has a lower capacity to remove excess hormones too.

P.S. In our experience, a sluggish liver is closely associated with hypothyroidism!

Sometimes, the biggest toxin is a toxic person.🤷

Toxic relationships can SIGNIFICANTLY impact YOUR physical health, fueling illness and contributing to autoimmune conditions through various mechanisms...

😱Chronic Stress: Toxic relationships often generate chronic stress, triggering the release of stress hormones like cortisol. Prolonged exposure to high levels of cortisol weakens the immune system, making the body more susceptible to infections and illnesses.

Chronic stress is the BIGGEST silent killer.

🔥Inflammation: Continuous stress from toxic relationships can lead to chronic inflammation in the body. Persistent inflammation has been linked to various health issues, including autoimmune conditions. For example, “many studies suggest that emotional stress is hard on your health—raising blood pressure and heart rate, for example,” says Johns Hopkins cardiologist Erin Michos, M.D. When the stress becomes chronic, so do these physical effects. Over time, that can lead to heart damage.” (Hopkins Medicine)

⚖️Hormonal Imbalance: Stress in toxic relationships disrupts hormonal balance, affecting the endocrine system. Hormonal disruptions can impact immune function and exacerbate autoimmune responses.

❌Unhealthy Coping Mechanisms: People in toxic relationships might resort to unhealthy coping mechanisms like excessive drinking, poor diet, lack of exercise, or inadequate sleep. These behaviors can weaken the body's defenses, exacerbating stress-related health problems and potentially triggering or worsening autoimmune conditions.

🧠Psychological Impact: Emotional distress, anxiety, and trauma stemming from toxic relationships can affect mental health, influencing the body's physical responses. Psychological stress can amplify the body's inflammatory and immune responses, impacting autoimmune conditions.

🧬Genetic and Environmental Interaction: While not solely related to toxic relationships, stressful environments, including toxic relationships, might interact with genetic predispositions, potentially triggering or worsening autoimmune conditions in susceptible individuals.

Vitamin D plays a HUGE role in maintaining your health, primarily by supporting bone health, immune function, mood regul...

Vitamin D plays a HUGE role in maintaining your health, primarily by supporting bone health, immune function, mood regulation, & strength. Without Vitamin D, bones can weaken, leading to conditions like osteoporosis!🦴

Plus, this vitamin is HUGE in supporting the immune system, helping the body fend off infections & reducing the risk of autoimmunity. And, it's been linked to mood regulation, with low levels increasing the risk of depression & other mood disorders!

❄ ️The body produces Vitamin D when the skin is exposed to UVB rays from sunlight. The decrease in sunlight exposure in the winter limits the skin's ability to produce Vitamin D. So, you may be at a higher risk of Vitamin D deficiency during winter.

☀️To counteract this, considering dietary sources of Vitamin D (fatty fish, fortified foods) & supplements (if recommended) can help. Spending time outdoors during daylight hours, even in winter, can help Vitamin D levels.

👉Personally, I am a fan of taking vitamin d WHEN NEEDED. Go to my “labs” highlight to see a video of me talking about this.

For example, issues might arise when taking vitamin d when there's an imbalance in the body's calcium regulation due to excessive Vitamin D intake. If there's an excessive amount of Vitamin D leading to abnormally high levels of calcium in the blood (a condition known as hypercalcemia), it can potentially cause calcium to be deposited in soft tissues, like blood vessels or kidneys, instead of being utilized for bone health. This can lead to problems like kidney stones or calcification in blood vessels.

🧬However, using Vitamin d in the winter months typically has more benefits than risks. Plus, some people have genetics variations/mutations in their genes that can impact how efficiently the body produces or utilizes Vitamin D. Some variations may lead to decreased production or impaired function of the Vitamin D receptor, which could affect how the body responds to Vitamin D – so supplementation can be needed.

Taking a Vitamin D3 or a Vitamin D3/K2 combination can be helpful for winter immunity.

👄It is estimated that up to 1 in 4 people are mouth breathers!

There are a variety of causes of mouth breathing including:

💥Enlarged adenoids: Adenoids are glands that look like small lumps of tissue located above the roof of your mouth and behind your nose. Adenoids protect young children from bacteria and viruses. Sometimes, adenoids are swollen or infected, blocking children’s airways. Adenoids typically shrink as people age, so enlarged adenoids are less likely to cause mouth breathing in adults.

👃Nasal congestion: If you have allergies, you may have a persistent stuffy nose that keeps you from breathing through your nose.

❌Deviated septum: Your septum is cartilage and bone that divides the inside of your nose into two sides. When your septum leans to one side, it can block your airway.

🧒Habitual behavior: Long-term habits, such as thumb-sucking or prolonged pacifier use, can influence facial and oral development, leading to mouth breathing.

😱Chronic Stress: Stress and anxiety can contribute to shallow breathing and a preference for mouth breathing, especially during periods of heightened tension.

🦷Dental Issues: Malocclusions, bite problems, tongue ties, or dental misalignments can influence the posture of the jaw and mouth, contributing to mouth breathing.

Promoting nasal breathing is crucial for maintaining optimal respiratory and oral health. If chronic mouth breathing is a concern, seeking guidance from healthcare professionals, such as an ear, nose, and throat specialist or a dentist, can help identify contributing factors and explore appropriate interventions.

Things that can help:
👃Increase airflow through the nose with orthodontic palatal expanders
👃Myofunctional therapy
👃Breathing exercises and mouth taping (with caution)
👃Allergy management and finding the root cause to allergies
👃Use a humidifier in your bedroom, especially during dry or winter months, to add moisture to the air. This helps prevent dryness in the nasal passages.

Yeah you read that right – your tongue gives you clues about your health!👅

If the eyes are the windows to the soul, then consider the tongue a sort of check-engine light for the body. - Harvard Health

Some tongue colors explained (resource: Harvard Health):

⚫A brown or black tongue signals a condition called “black hairy tongue.” This occurs when papillae get too long. These tiny bumps don’t usually get much chance to grow because they are shed regularly with all the activity in your mouth. If they do grow, they can trap bacteria & a mix of food colors, leading to the brown or black tinge. Risk factors include taking antibiotics or antihistamines, smoking, dry mouth, drinking excessive amounts of coffee or black tea, or poor oral hygiene.

⚪Thick white patches or white sores on the tongue probably mean you have an overgrowth of yeast in the mouth (thrush). Thrush can be triggered by conditions such as diabetes or HIV, side effects of antibiotics or cancer treatment, wearing dentures, smoking, dry mouth, or using steroid inhalers. In rare cases, white patches or sores are symptoms of oral cancer.

🟡If your tongue has painful red or yellow sores, you might be dealing with canker sores (irritated tissues), thrush (which can sometimes appear as red patches), or (in rare cases) oral cancer.

🔴A bright red tongue can indicate that you have a vitamin B12 deficiency or an infection called scarlet fever. If you have bright red patches that don’t hurt & seem to migrate from one place on the tongue to another, you might have a harmless, incurable condition called “geographic tongue.”

☕P.S. Coffee, tea, & many types of foods, such as curried dishes with lots of yellow turmeric, can also leave their marks.

👉Good oral hygiene requires that you floss your teeth at least once a day & brush them at least twice a day. Take a few seconds to use the brush on your tongue. Oil pulling is another GREAT tool!

🧠The glymphatic system is the lymphatic system of your brain! It is KEY to detoxing toxins from your brain!

🎊This is a NEWLY discovered system as it was only discovered 10 years ago! Dr. Nedergaard’s team (the discovery team) dubbed the new system as “the glymphatic system,” since it acts much like the lymphatic system but is managed by brain cells known as glial cells.

👉In a 2020 study, researchers stated that “the glymphatic system is constantly filtering toxins from the brain, but during wakefulness, this system is mainly disengaged… Impaired glymphatic clearance has been linked to neurodegenerative diseases.” PMID: 33212927

They also stated that “sleep is a primary driver of glymphatic clearance. However, research on a wealth of other lifestyle choices such as sleep quality, quantity, physical exercise, changes in body posture, omega 3, chronic stress, intermittent fasting and low doses of alcohol has begun to emerge.” PMID: 33212927

💤Here is your sign that you need to focus on sleep… Glymphatic activity is dramatically boosted during sleep. Photoimaging of in vivo mice demonstrated a 90% reduction in glymphatic clearance during wakefulness, and twice the amount of protein clearance from the brain intima during sleep!
PMID: 33212927

This means that SLEEP DRIVES DETOXIFICATION!😴👏

If the glymphatic system fails to cleanse the brain as it is meant to, waste may begin to accumulate in the brain – leading to symptoms and inflammatory conditions!

Swipe to the end of this post to see ways to support and detox your glymphatic system! But I’ll tell you that the NUMBER ONE thing you can do for it is SLEEP!

03/26/2024

🪱Pinworms are small parasites that can infect the intestines. They are common in children & they are highly contagious. In the US, pinworms infect 20- 42 million people each year. PMID: 10832422

They are typically transmitted from one person to another through the ingestion of pinworm eggs. The eggs can be found on contaminated surfaces, like bedding, clothing, & toys, & can be easily transferred to the mouth when a kid touches these surfaces & then puts their hands in their mouth.

The most common symptom of a pinworm infection is intense itching around the a**l area, especially at night. This itching is a result of the female pinworms laying their eggs in the skin folds around the a**s. Other common symptoms include restless sleep, irritability, & sometimes visible worms around the a**l area/in underwear.

To diagnose pinworms, a doctor may use a "tape test." This involves applying a piece of transparent tape to the peria**l (a**l) area in the morning & then examining it under a microscope. They are often treated with a simple round of medication.

Here are some tips when dealing with a pinworm infection:
🔹Before you go to bed, rub a small amount of coconut oil into the affected area.
🔹Garlic is said to kill any existing eggs & prevent female pinworms from laying more eggs. You can ingest it in small doses or apply it topically like a salve (but this can be irritating).
🔹Eat fiber to promote bowel movements

⚠️If pinworms aren’t treated, they can sometimes cause bigger issues such as UTIs, recurring infections (if not properly dealt with the first time), secondary infections (from skin itching & breaking), & appendicitis symptoms, etc.

Pinworm infections are generally not considered a serious health problem, but they can be highly uncomfortable – so recognizing the signs are highly important.

⚠️According to the WHO, almost 1 million people die every year due to lead poisoning! Millions more are exposed to low levels of lead causing lifelong health problems, including anemia, hypertension, immunotoxicity & toxicity to the reproductive organs. The neurological & behavioral effects of lead could be irreversible.

Lead poisoning occurs when lead — a metal that was once a common ingredient in paint & is still used in batteries, pipes, pottery, & even cosmetics — builds up in the body. Little by little, lead can collect in your child's blood, brain, & bones. Symptoms may take a long time to appear, but at toxic levels, lead poisoning can affect your child's language, attention, & even IQ. Lead can affect people of all ages, but children aged 6 & younger are especially at risk, in part because their growing bodies absorb more lead.🥴

🔹The most common causes of lead poisoning are lead-based paint & lead-contaminated dust in older buildings.
🔹Lead exposure can harm young children & babies — even before they are born.
🔹Even children that seem healthy can have high levels of lead in their bodies.
🔹The CDC estimated that almost 500,000 children between the ages of 1 & 5 living in the US have elevated lead levels. Approximately 1 out of every 25 children has dangerous levels of lead in their bloodstream.

While children’s lead levels have come down steadily since the 1960s, there’s still no known safe level of lead exposure. On a population level, we know that lead exposure impairs children’s neurologic development, especially executive-level brain functions, attention, & hyperactivity, although there may not be a recognized deficit in every child.

⬆️All of the information above was taken directly from the Boston Children’s Hospital website.

03/24/2024

💇The health of your hair often serves as a visible indicator of your health. First and foremost, the nutritional status of your body significantly influences the condition of your hair. Essential nutrients (vitamins, minerals, & proteins) are key for the growth of healthy hair. So undereating, neglecting protein, steering away from healthy fats, & being scared of carbs can do more harm than good.

Plus, optimal blood circulation is key for delivering oxygen & nutrients to hair follicles. And, hormones play a KEY role in regulating the hair growth cycle, & imbalances related to thyroid function, androgens, & s*x hormones can impact all aspects of your hair.🔥

😬Stress levels also play a key role, as high levels of stress can trigger conditions like telogen effluvium, characterized by excessive hair shedding. Chronic stress may contribute to hormonal imbalances that further affect the health of your hair! Plus, the state of your immune system is critical, as a compromised immune system can result in conditions such as alopecia areata, where the immune system attacks hair follicles.

🧬Of course, genetic factors also come into play, influencing the texture, thickness, and susceptibility to certain hair conditions. Toxic hair care products, heat damage, & other topically applied products can also damage your hair - leading to hair loss, dry hair, etc.⚠️

Metabolic conditions like diabetes and insulin resistance can impact hair health through increased inflammation affecting hair follicles. And, environmental factors, including exposure to mold and pollutants can also impact the health of your hair. Plus, we can’t forget about gut health. It can affect hair health by influencing nutrient absorption.

03/23/2024

Alright, I’m sick & tired of seeing people promote liver cleanses without talking about why the liver has issues in the first place. It isn’t fun or trendy to talk about, but if you truly want to support your liver – you have to cleanse your liver by maintaining a healthy lifestyle & diet first & foremost. 🤷

Yes - infections & toxicities can place MAJOR burdens on the liver. But, in order to lower that burden, we have to consciously make healthy choices. Yes - unchecked infections & toxicities can wreak havoc even if you live a healthy lifestyle & eat a balanced diet. That isn’t the point of this post (I have other posts for that - check my “liver” highlight).

The point is – we live in a world with toxins & toxicants being bombarded at us at every angle. They are in our food, water, air, hygienic products, perfumes, sunscreens, etc.🌎

Sure, your body may be able to thrive without focusing on the things listed in the graphic – but it catches up with you with time. Slowly adapting your lifestyle toward STOPPING all of the things listed in the graphic above is important to the health of your liver!!

🪣We are all born with a “toxin bucket.” We are ALL born with different genetic predispositions, gut microbiomes, toxicities, & traumas. If you were inherently born with a fuller “toxin bucket,” your liver will need more love. You may always feel sicker than everyone else, be sicker longer than everyone else, & be more prone to develop chronic illnesses - which is why SUPPORTING YOUR LIVER daily is KEY.

🗣️I’ve seen people take all the right supplements – but if you don’t focus on your lifestyle, diet, & trauma – you will NOT see progress.

⚠️Did you know that if you're insulin resistant, you are more prone to getting fatty liver?
⚠️Did you know that if you don’t sleep enough, your liver & glymphatic system won’t detox toxins as effectively?
⚠️Did you know that some NSAIDs, especially when used in high doses or for extended periods, can lead to liver damage or hepatotoxicity? This can result in elevated liver enzyme levels in blood tests, which is a sign of liver inflammation.
