Selah Doula Co. Christ-centered support for birth and beyond ✨ serving women in the Kansas City community

“We don’t let moms go past 40 weeks.”

Not “we recommend induction.” Not “let’s discuss options.”

“We DON’T LET.”

Let me be very clear: They don’t OWN your body.
Your due date is an ESTIMATE. Your baby doesn’t have an expiration date. And no provider gets to decide when your pregnancy ends unless there’s a medical indication.

Listen to the language providers use:

“We don’t let…”
“We don’t allow…”
“Our policy doesn’t permit…”
“You can’t…”

These are control words. Not medical advice. Control.
They’re telling you what they will or won’t “allow” you to do with your own body. As if you need their permission. As if they have authority over your autonomous medical decisions.

“Policy” is not a medical indication.

Low amniotic fluid? Reduced movement? High blood pressure? Actual concerns? Those are medical indications to discuss intervention.

But “you reached an arbitrary date on a calendar”? That’s not medical. That’s convenience.

Here’s what informed consent looks like:
“You’re at 40 weeks. Baby looks great on monitoring. Fluid levels are good. Everything is healthy. Some providers recommend induction around now, but research shows that for truly low-risk pregnancies, waiting until 41 or even 42 weeks with appropriate monitoring is safe. What would you like to do?”

Here’s what coercion looks like:
“We don’t let moms go past 40 weeks.”
“We don’t allow our patients to refuse induction.”
“Our policy doesn’t permit going past your due date.”

You are not a child who needs to be “let” or “allowed” to do things with your own body.

You are an autonomous human being with the right to make informed decisions about your pregnancy and birth.

When a provider uses language like “don’t let” or “don’t allow,” they’re revealing how they see you:

Not as a partner in your care. Not as an autonomous decision-maker. But as someone who needs to be managed and controlled.

Here’s something important to remember:

YOU hired your provider. YOU (or your insurance) are paying THEM. Not the other way around.

They work for you. You don’t answer to them.

And that means you can fire them.

Even at 38 weeks. Even if you’ve been seeing them your whole pregnancy.

You are not stuck. You are not obligated to stay with a provider who uses controlling language, dismisses your concerns, or treats policy as more important than your autonomy.

You deserve providers who believe in your body’s ability to birth, practice informed consent, and provide evidence-based care.

Your body. Your baby. Your choice. Your provider works for YOU.

You deserve respect, not control.

Please welcome the newest addition to Selah Doula Co.!!💗💗
Hey everyone...I’m Lexi! I’ve spent the last 9 years caring for young women through pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. It’s truly where my heart comes alive, and where my desire to become a doula was born. I’m married to my biggest supporter, and I’m a mama to a sweet 5-year-old girl and an almost 2-year-old boy, so I know firsthand how beautiful (and stretching 😅) this season can be. My faith is at the center of everything I do, and I love showing up with a calm, encouraging presence to help families bring sweet blessings into the world. When I’m not working, you can find me cheering on KC sports teams, trying out local coffee shops, and spending time with my family. I’m so excited to be joining the Selah team and walking alongside families in this season 🤍

This!

Sometimes in labor someone will walk in and say,
“We’re going to check your cervix.”
“We’re going to start Pitocin.”
“We’re going to break your water.”
“We’re going to place an internal monitor.”

And it sounds decided.

It sounds like the train is already moving and you’re expected to just nod.

Labor does not cancel your autonomy.

Even in a hospital room.
Even in a gown.
Even when you’re tired.
Even when you’re six centimeters and shaking.
Even if you have an epidural.
Even on day 2, 3 or 4 of labor.

Nothing should be done to your body without your consent.

Let me say it again.

Nothing should be done to your body without your consent.

Not a cervical check.
Not an IV.
Not breaking your water.
Not increasing medication.

You deserve to know:

Why is this being recommended?
What are the benefits?
What are the risks?
Is this urgent?
What happens if we wait?
Are there other options?

A confident tone does not replace informed consent.

It does not mean you can’t ask why.

It does not mean you can’t take a breath and say, “Help me understand.”

You deserve to know why something is being recommended. Why now. What changes if you wait. What the benefit is. What the risk is. Whether this is urgent or simply time-sensitive.

And here’s the part that surprises a lot of women.

You can decline anything.

A cervical check.
Breaking your water.
Medication.
Internal monitoring.

You can say:
“Can you explain why?”
“Is this medically necessary right now?”
“I’d like to wait.”
“No, thank you.”

You are not being difficult.

You are exercising your right to informed consent.

If something is truly emergent, that will be communicated clearly and directly. There is a different tone when seconds matter.

Birth is happening in your body.

Not around you.
Not over you.
Not past you.

You are still part of the conversation, but “We’re going to…” is not the same as “You must.” Your autonomy does not disappear because you are in a hospital gown. And sometimes the most powerful thing you can do in a birth room is slow things down.

Because your voice is not optional in your own birth story 🤎

I have been so emotional after our wonderful celebration! I can’t even begin to explain what this meant to us today! Seeing our lovely families who we have supported in the past, or will be supporting at their birth this year was just so precious.
God has placed such wonderful mothers and families into our lives and it is not something we take for granted, at all.
We truly cherish each and every family we’ve had the honor of supporting, including those not pictured. Thank you for letting us be a part of your story, a part of your journey.🥹💕

Guys we are SO incredibly excited to be celebrating 2 years of Selah Doula Co.!!!
For those who don’t know our story, Kate and I (Katie) met at a Christian doula training in 2023. We both had a few kiddos of our own, and both had a passion for serving women while also serving Christ.
We became easy friends during the training, especially bonding over our same first names (Kaitlyn and Katelyn😆). After keeping in touch afterwards, we both felt a tug of the Holy Spirit to go into business together.
And thus, Selah Doula Co. was born! All glory to God.🙌🏼

We will be having a party to celebrate our anniversary on January 31st from 1-3pm in Lee’s Summit! Anyone is welcome to come celebrate with us! Especially all of our current and past clients, birth workers, friends, mamas, etc! Spouses and kiddos are welcome as well☺️
It will be hosted at Radiant Imaging: 212 NW McNary Ct, Lee’s Summit, MO 64086

Most people don’t know the real reason why eye ointment is routinely administered to newborn babies.
Some countries have stopped administering it routinely, simply because there’s less of a need for it for women who have consistent prenatal care and testing.
These facts are sourced from Evidence Based Birth, which is a resource we always encourage parents to look at when making these decisions about themselves and their babies.
Please let us know your thoughts, or if you’d like a link to the article!
